The Other Abusir

This chapter discusses the change in how scholars view Abusir, in part due to the discovery of a cemetery with shaft tombs dating from the end of the Twenty-sixth and the beginning of the Twenty-seventh Dynasty—that is, from the end of what is known as the Saite Period and the beginning of the first period of Persian domination over Egypt.

Phoenician and Aramaic Inscriptions from Abusir

The presence of foreign elements within the site of Abusir is uniquely documented by inscriptions written in Aramaic and Phoenician, as well as in the Carian language. Several such inscriptions have already been discovered during excavations of the German Oriental Society between 1902 and 1908 and led by Ludwig Borchardt.
