Acalculous cholecystitis in burned patients
The American Journal of Surgery, 1971Abstract Ten cases of acalculous cholecystitis in burned patients are reviewed. The disorder appears to be associated with overwhelming bacterial invasion or other postburn complications leading to dehydration or necessitating surgery. Recommendations regarding prophylaxis and therapy are made.

The condition has numerous causes that result in bile stasis and ischemia leading to inflammation and infection in the gallbladder wall.

During a two year period, 1981 to 1982, 21 of 262 patients undergoing cholecystectomy had acalculous cholecystitis. The majority of these patients had chronic disease, and more than 50 per cent of them were in the older age group and had other chronic medical problems.

The American Journal of Surgery, 1977Twenty-six patients undergoing cholecystectomy for suspected gallbladder disease in hospitals serving the Igbos of Nigeria were studied. Sixteen patients had chronic acalculous cholecystitis, seven exhibited cholelithiasis, and three showed normal gallbladders.
