Acute Acalculous Cholecystitis in Leptospirosis

The authors present three patients with acalculous cholecystitis seen at a tertiary care center in Bangkok. The first patient was explored surgically because peritonitis was suspected. The two other patients were treated conservatively with antibiotics and supportive care, and they recovered fully.

Acute acalculous cholecystitis is a well recognized complication of many acute illnesses. Ischaemia of the gallbladder seems to have an important role in its pathogenesis.Microangiography was performed in 15 gallbladders immediately after cholecystectomy by infusing 10 per cent barium sulphate into the specimen.

Acalculous cholecystitis in Nigerian Igbos

Twenty-six patients undergoing cholecystectomy for suspected gallbladder disease in hospitals serving the Igbos of Nigeria were studied. Sixteen patients had chronic acalculous cholecystitis, seven exhibited cholelithiasis, and three showed normal gallbladders.
