Genomic evidence for the widespread presence of GH45 cellulases among soil invertebrates

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 33, Issue 20, October 2024.
Abstract Lignocellulose is a major component of vascular plant biomass. Its decomposition is crucial for the terrestrial carbon cycle. Microorganisms are considered primary decomposers, but evidence increases that some invertebrates may also decompose lignocellulose. We investigated the taxonomic distribution and evolutionary origins of GH45 hydrolases,

Morphological and ontogenetic characteristics of Miridex putorii (Acariformes: Demodecidae), a new genus and species of skin mite specific to the European polecat Mustela putorius

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife, 2022
Among carnivorans, mites of the family Demodecidae are mainly represented by the eight species of the genus Demodex known to cause demodecosis in domestic dog Canis lupus familiaris Linnaeus, 1758 and domestic cat Felis catus Linnaeus, 1758.

New records of feather mites (Acariformes: Analgoidea, Pterolichoidea) in Piracicaba, SP, Brazil

open access: yesEntomological Communications, 2020
Seven species and four undetermined feather mites are reported from various birds in Piracicaba, Brazil: Dermoglyphus elongatus Mégnin, 1877 (Dermoglyphidae) ex Gallus gallus domesticus (Linnaeus, 1758) “chicken” (Phasianidae), Mesosathes tetrasetosus ...

Species Diversity and Distribution of Synanthropic Acarid Mites (Acariformes, Acaridia) in Transcarpathia

open access: yesZoodiversity, 2023
This article presents the results of research on the species composition of acarid mites and their abundance in Transcarpathia. 24 species of acarids were identified in the studied substrates. The maximum number of species was found in the lowlands – 24,

A plurality of morphological characters need not equate with phylogenetic accuracy: A rare genomic change refutes the placement of Solifugae and Pseudoscorpiones in Haplocnemata

open access: yesEvolution &Development, Volume 26, Issue 4, July 2024.
Developmental transcriptomic data support an unduplicated genome in a solifuge, disfavoring the traditional grouping of pseudoscorpions and camel spiders as Haplocnemata. Abstract Recent advances in higher‐level invertebrate phylogeny have leveraged shared features of genomic architecture to resolve contentious nodes across the tree of life.

A new replacement name in Rhagidiidae (Acariformes: Prostigmata: Eupodoidea)

open access: yesAcarina, 2022
The recently proposed name Sigthoria Ceccolini and Cianferoni, 2021 (replacement for the rhagidiid genus name Thoria Zacharda, 1980 nec Stål, 1864) turned out to be preoccupied (junior homonym of Sigthoria Koenike, 1907) and it needs to be changed. The substitute name Thorrhagidia Cianferoni and Ceccolini nom.n.

Mouthpart morphology and feeding structures in the palaeocharinid trigonotarbids of the Rhynie chert: insights from comparisons to modern arachnids

open access: yesPalaeontology, Volume 67, Issue 4, July/August 2024.
Abstract Trigonotarbida, an extinct order of spider‐like arachnids, were significant predators between the late Silurian and early Permian. Characterized by their segmented opisthosoma, clasp‐knife chelicera, and paired book lungs, they played a pivotal role in the formation of Early Devonian terrestrial ecosystems.

Demodex bialoviensis sp. nov. (Acariformes, Demodecidae) a new, specific parasite of the European bison Bison bonasus (Artiodactyla, Bovidae)

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology: Parasites and Wildlife, 2022
Sixteen species of parasitic mites of the family Demodecidae have been described in ungulates (Ungulatomorpha), particularly among domestic animals and livestock. Specific synhospital species have been found in seven host species.

Invertebrate diversity in groundwater‐filled lava caves is influenced by both neutral‐ and niche‐based processes

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 6, June 2024.
Here, we examine how ecological factors shape invertebrate diversity in ponds found in lava caves in Iceland. We specially focus on the importance of neutral and niche‐based processes. Abstract Understanding which factors shape and maintain biodiversity is essential to understand how ecosystems respond to crises.
