The role of foreign-accentedness in lexical processing

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2007
Previous evidence indicates that foreign-accented speech influences spoken word recognition (accented stimuli are processed with reduced accuracy and slower response times). The present study aims to extend and further explore the relationship between foreign-accentedness and spoken word recognition. Specifically, the present study strives to determine

A note on native and non-native accentedness judgements

2021
Talkers in a second language can readily be identified as speaking with a foreign accent, characterized by both specific and more general deviations from the phonology of a target language. In this study, we examined the identifications of native and non-native talkers by listeners with various amounts of knowledge of the target language.

Scaling of apparent accentedness by magnitude estimation and sensory modality matching

Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, 1975

Ss gave magnitude estimations and also squeezed a hand dynamometer to indicate the amount of accentedness in the reading of an English passage by each of the speakers. There was significant agreement among Ss regarding the speech
