Sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors for hypertension in cardiovascular–kidney–metabolic syndrome

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The antihypertensive mechanism of sodium–glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors has been traditionally attributed to osmotic diuresis. However, emerging evidence reveals multifaceted mechanisms beyond diuresis, including regulation of the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system, sympathetic nervous system suppression, ion homeostasis ...

Exercise intolerance and impaired aerobic capacity in heart transplant recipients

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Heart transplant recipients exhibit reduced exercise tolerance and persistently diminished aerobic capacity despite exercise training. Exercise tolerance depends on integrated oxygen transport and utilization, which are impaired in heart transplant recipients.

TMEM16A chloride channels in the female reproductive tract and their role in normal and dysfunctional pregnancy and labour

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend TMEM16A plays a pivotal role in setting the duration of the action potential plateau in human uterine smooth muscle. An increase in TMEM16A expression in labour underpins a lengthening of the plateau and this provides time for the contraction to become larger and longer, important for timely successful labour.

Angiotensin‐converting enzyme and exercise adaptations: Genetic variability, pharmacological modulation and future directions

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend ACE I/D genotype, enzyme activity and integrated physiological adaptations. Upper panel: Conceptual framework linking the ACE I/D polymorphism (left) with circulating/tissue ACE activity (centre; violin plots based on hypothetical data for illustration) and strength/power versus endurance phenotypes (right).

Mechanisms of haemoglobin mass expansion following heat stress

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Theorised mechanisms of heat stress‐induced erythropoiesis which may facilitate the expansion of haemoglobin mass. A, acute: heat stress‐induced renal ischaemia. Redistribution of blood flow away from the kidneys to facilitate thermoregulation during heat stress could reduce renal oxygen delivery, subsequently lowering renal PO2${

Coordinated regulation of PIEZO2 by alternative splicing, post‐translational modification, membrane trafficking and protein partners

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend Regulatory mechanisms such as alternative splicing, post‐translational modification, membrane trafficking, and protein interactions control channel gating, membrane abundance, and overall activity of PIEZO2. Proper regulation supports PIEZO2‐dependent proprioceptive, somatosensory, nociceptive, pruriceptive and interoceptive ...

Therapeutic Balloon‐Assisted Enteroscopy: Recent Advances in the Management of Small Bowel Diseases

open access: yesDEN Open, Volume 7, Issue 1, April 2027.
ABSTRACT Balloon‐assisted enteroscopy (BAE) has substantially advanced small bowel disease management. This review summarizes recent therapeutic BAE advances, focusing on three major indications: small bowel vascular lesions, hereditary polyposis syndromes, and Crohn's disease (CD).
