The maturing of nuclear fuel: Past to Accident Tolerant Fuel
Progress in Nuclear Energy, 2018Abstract Nuclear fuel has made great strides from the advent of the nuclear industry at Shippingport to the on-going development of Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) for potential implementation in commercial nuclear plants. The development of Zircaloy-2 fuel with UO2 pellets at Shippingport was revolutionary.

Accident Tolerant Fuel with Chromium-Coated Fuel-Rod Cladding
Atomic Energy, 2021The accident at the Fukushima NPP (Japan) showed the particular danger of a steam-zirconium reaction arising when the temperature of the fuel-rod cladding rises after loss of coolant. Work on the development of accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) has intensified in almost all countries with developed nuclear energy.

Accident tolerant fuels for LWRs: A perspective
Journal of Nuclear Materials, 2014Abstract The motivation for exploring the potential development of accident tolerant fuels in light water reactors to replace existing Zr alloy clad monolithic (U, Pu) oxide fuel is outlined. The evaluation includes a brief review of core degradation processes under design-basis and beyond-design-basis transient conditions.

Fuel Cycle Economy of Accident Tolerant Fuel Assemblies
Volume 3: Nuclear Fuel and Material, Reactor Physics, and Transport Theory, 2018Taking the large commercial pressurized water reactor and its mature fuel assembly as reference, this paper has analyzed economic performance of two accident tolerant fuel (ATF) designs based on once-through fuel cycle. The results show that the fuel cycle costs of both AT F designs have grown due to application of BeO powder, which is expensive.

ON APPROACHES TO REGULATION OF ACCIDENT TOLERANT FUEL APPLICATION
