Ordnung: Accipitriformes – Greifvögel

Die Ordnung Accipitriformes setzt sich nach der systematischen Auffassung bei del Hoyo und Collar (2014) aus 3 Familien, 71 Gattungen und 250 Arten zusammen. Die Familien Sagittariidae (Sekretare) und Pandionidae (Fischadler) bestehen aus nur jeweils einer Spezies.

Helminth infestation in birds of prey (Accipitriformes and Falconiformes) in Southern Italy

Helminth infestation was identified at post mortem examination in 110/116 (95%) raptors belonging to six species in Southern Italy. Pathological changes associated with helminths were observed in 81/110 (74%) of birds. Lesions in the respiratory system were associated with the nematode Serratospiculum tendo only in Falco peregrinus.

Eye Size, Fovea, and Foraging Ecology in Accipitriform Raptors

Birds with larger eyes are predicted to have higher spatial resolution because of their larger retinal image. Raptors are well known for their acute vision, mediated by their deep central fovea. Because foraging strategies may demand specific visual adaptations, eye size and fovea may differ between species with different foraging ecology.

Helminth Community Structure in Birds of Prey (Accipitriformes and Falconiformes) in Southern Italy

We compared helminth communities in 6 species of birds of prey from the Calabria region of southern Italy. In total, 31 helminth taxa, including 17 nematodes, 9 digeneans, 3 acanthocephalans, and 2 cestodes, were found. All helminth species were observed in the gastrointestinal tract, except for 3 spirurid nematodes.

Taxonomic status of Harlan’s Hawk Buteo jamaicensis harlani (Aves: Accipitriformes)

Since its description in 1830 by Audubon, Harlan’s Hawk (taxon harlani) has been considered both as a species (Buteo harlani) (1830–1891 and 1944–1972) and as a subspecies of Red-tailed Hawk (B. jamaicensis harlani) (1891–1944 and 1973 to present).
