A Trp574–Leu substitution confers resistance to three classes of acetolactate synthase inhibitors in Australian brome grass (Bromus diandrus)

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Target‐site based imidazolinone resistance in brome grass was found to be conferred by a mutation at position 574 in the ALS gene and to severely impact the efficacy of the herbicide Intervix®, a co‐formulation of imazamox and imazapyr. Abstract BACKGROUND Brome grass (Bromus diandrus) is a prevalent weed in southern Australian cropping regions which ...

Essential oils as bioherbicides: effects of orange and citronella oils on weed germination and early growth

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Essential oils from orange and citronella showed dose‐dependent inhibition of weed germination and early growth, highlighting their potential as bioherbicides and sustainable tools for integrated weed management. Abstract BACKGROUND Increasing selection of herbicide‐resistant weed biotypes has intensified the search for alternatives to the intensive ...

Microbiome‐mediated chemical communication in insects: Implications for pest management

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Microbiome–semiochemical interactions involve the following processes: direct microbial synthesis, host gene regulation, precursor biotransformation, microbiome modulation and indirect ecological signaling. Abstract Insects rely on semiochemicals to regulate aggregation, mating, foraging, and host selection. This review synthesizes evidence that insect‐

Structural and Kinetic Comparison of Acetolactate Synthase and Acetohydroxyacid Synthase from Klebsiella pneumoniae

open access: yes, 2019
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)Acetolactate synthase (ALS) and acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS) are two thiamin diphosphate (ThDP)-dependent enzymes that catalyze the formation of acetolactate from two molecules of pyruvate.

Resistance of Echinochloa crus-galli Populations to Acetolactate Synthase-Inhibiting Herbicides

open access: yesInternational Journal of Agronomy, 2012
Three Echinochloa crus-galli (barnyardgrass) populations from rice fields in Arkansas (AR1 and AR2) and Mississippi (MS1), USA, were recently confirmed to be resistant to imazethapyr.

Pro‐197 mutations confer resistance to thiencarbazone but not to foramsulfuron in ALS‐resistant Poa annua populations

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Foramsulfuron remains effective on Pro‐197 Poa annua, but co‐formulation with thiencarbazone reduces efficacy due to limited activity and antagonism. Therefore, foramsulfuron + thiencarbazone should be used in fields without ALS‐resistant weeds to ensure effective in‐crop control.

Structural and Kinetic Comparison of Acetolactate Synthase and Acetohydroxyacid Synthase from Klebsielle pneumoniae

open access: yes, 2019
Acetolactate synthase (ALS) and acetohydroxyacid synthase (AHAS) are two thiamin diphosphate (ThDP)-dependent enzymes that catalyze the formation of acetolactate from two molecules of pyruvate. In addition to acetolactate, AHAS can catalyze the formation

Effects of elevated CO2 and temperature on cocklebur (Xanthium strumarium L.) and its herbicide response

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Elevated CO2 promotes the growth of Xanthium strumarium while increasing its susceptibility to the systemic herbicide trifloxysulfuron‐sodium. The efficacy of the soil‐active herbicide fluometuron remains unaffected by changes in CO2 concentration and temperature.

Identification of the optimal codons for acetolactate synthase from weeds: an in-silico study

open access: yesPlant, Soil and Environment, 2021
Although various studies of codon usage bias have been reported in a broad spectrum of organisms, no studies to date have examined codon usage bias for herbicide target genes. In this study, we analysed codon usage patterns for the acetolactate synthase (
