Precipitation: Its Acidic Nature
Science, 1975A comparison of the free hydrogen ion concentration and the total hydrogen ion concentration of rain samples shows that rain is a weak acid. The weak acid nature of rain casts doubt on the concepts that the acidity of rain is increasing and that these increases are due to strong acids such as sulfuric acid.

The total annual emissions of sulfur oxides and nitrogen oxides in Canada are estimated to be 7.2 × 106 t and 1.4 × 106 t, respectively. These figures represent 5% and 2%, respectively, of the estimated worldwide anthropogenic emissions. Nearly two-thirds of the Canadian SO2 emissions come from primary smelters located in low population areas.

The effects of acid precipitation on amphibians
Ecotoxicology, 1993: A large number of studies conclusively demonstrate that low pH conditions have important ecological effects on amphibian communities. These effects vary developmentally and depend on complex interactions with other physical, chemical, and biological parameters. Acid sensitivity varies widely within and among species of amphibians.
