The Global Distribution of Acidifying Wet Deposition

Environmental Science & Technology, 2002
The acid-base status of precipitation is a result of a balance between acidifying compounds--mainly oxides of sulfur and nitrogen--and alkaline compounds--mainly ammonia and alkaline material in windblown soil dust. We use current models of the global atmospheric distribution of such compounds to estimate the geographical distribution of pH in ...

Release of kinins by acidified bovine pseudoglobulin

Biochemical Pharmacology, 1971
Abstract Acidification of bovine pseudoglobulin followed by neutralization leads to a “spontaneous” release of bradykinin-like activity. The kinin(s) released under these conditions has relatively large effects on arterial blood pressure and small effects on intestinal smooth muscle when compared to bradykinin. However, if pseudoglobulin is heated in

Neutralization of Acidified Watercourses

1990
In this study particular attention has been paid to the solving of neutralization problems in Finnish lakes with two special characteristics: the typically high humus content, and the 4–6 months for which the watercourses are covered by ice. The effect of organic content on the specific neutralization demand was studied by means of laboratory ...

Acidified nitrite as a potential antifungal agent

International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents, 2005
The use of acidified nitrite as a potential antifungal agent was investigated by exposing clinical isolates of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida tropicalis, Cryptococcus neoformans, Aspergillus fumigatus and Rhodotorula to varying concentrations of acidified nitrite at different pH levels to determine the minimal fungicidal concentration ...

Acidifying Effects on Groundwater

1992
Abstract In recent years, several reports concerning the utilization of acid groundwater, in water supply have emphasized corrosion and health aspects. Acid rain may dissolve harmful elements from soils and indirectly affect water supply distribution systems. Groundwater acidification occurs also in areas where lake acidification is reported.

Emissions of acidifying components

1992
Emissions of S02, N0X and ammonia are major contributors to acidification of natural ecosystems. The paper reviews purpose and methods of emission inventories and compares the major international inventories in Europe. For each of the pollutants the major gaps in current knowledge and discrepancies in existing data are briefly discussed.
