A Thermophilic and Unusually Acidophilic Amylase Produced by a Thermophilic AcidophilicBacillussp. [PDF]

open access: yesAgricultural and Biological Chemistry, 1982
Bacillus sp. 11-1S, a thermophilic acidophilic bacterial strain, produced an extracellular amylase with unusual characteristics. The enzyme was purified 40-fold by SE-Sephadex column chromatography. The pH optimum for activity was 2.0, and substantial activity was noted in the pH range of 1.5 ~ 3.5.

Fungal‐Bacterial Interactions in Polymicrobial Infections: Hidden Threats

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 3, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Polymicrobial infections involving fungi and bacteria represent a major and increasingly recognized clinical challenge, in which interkingdom interactions significantly amplify disease severity, antimicrobial resistance, and treatment failure. Rather than passive co‐existence, fungal–bacterial communities form highly coordinated systems driven

Polyphasic Characterization of Acetobacter indonesiensis UNPADCC 01‐5 Isolated From a Traditional Fermented Food, Oncom Merah

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 3, June 2026.
The polyphasic approach (morphology, physiology, biochemistry and genetics) was used to characterize Acetobacter indonesiensis strain UNPADCC 01‐5, which was isolated from oncom merah. The strain's potential as a culture for acidic fermentations and a biofunctional agent was supported by its adaptive characteristics, which included acid tolerance ...

Delayed diagnosis of 3β‐HSD7 deficiency in adolescence: Two case reports and review of the literature

open access: yesJPGN Reports, Volume 7, Issue 2, Page 236-241, May 2026.
Abstract Congenital bile acid synthesis defects (BASD), the most common of which is 3β‐hydroxy‐Δ5‐C27‐steroid dehydrogenase oxidoreductase (3β‐HSD7) deficiency, are a rare cause of fat‐soluble vitamin malabsorption. We describe a 14‐year‐old girl who presented at 14 months with a left distal femur fracture and failure to thrive.

Acidihalobacter: Novel Halotolerant Iron- and Sulfur-oxidizing Acidophiles with Potential for Saline Water Bioleaching [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Members of the Acidihalobacter genus are halotolerant, iron- and sulfur-oxidizing acidophiles that have potential in saline water bioleaching in areas where waters and ores contain high levels of chloride ion.

Limited role of sessile acidophiles in pyrite oxidation below redox potential of 650 mV

open access: yes, 2017
Pyrite oxidation by mixed mesophilic acidophiles was conducted under conditions of controlled and non-controlled redox potential to investigate the role of sessile microbes in pyrite oxidation.

Competitive Growth of Sulfate-Reducing Bacteria with Bioleaching Acidophiles for Bioremediation of Heap Bioleaching Residue

open access: yes, 2020
Mining waste rocks containing sulfide minerals naturally provide the habitat for iron- and sulfur-oxidizing microbes, and they accelerate the generation of acid mine drainage (AMD) by promoting the oxidation of sulfide minerals. Sulfate-reducing bacteria

Function and Adaptation of Acidophiles in Natural and Applied Communities

open access: yes, 2018
Acidophiles are organisms that have evolved to grow optimally at high concentrations of protons. Members of this group are found in all three domains of life, although most of them belong to the Archaea and Bacteria.

Perspectives for Advancing Biotechnological Succinic Acid Production

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 5, May 2026.
Succinic acid is an important molecule for sustainable chemical manufacturing, but its industrial production faces high costs and sustainability challenges, which are linked to feedstocks and excessive acid/base consumption. This opinion explores production routes based on next‐generation feedstocks and low‐pH fermentations to inspire novel cost ...

A Model of Aerobic and Anaerobic Metabolism of Hydrogen in the Extremophile Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
Hydrogen can serve as an electron donor for chemolithotrophic acidophiles, especially in the deep terrestrial subsurface and geothermal ecosystems. Nevertheless, the current knowledge of hydrogen utilization by mesophilic acidophiles is minimal.
