Polished enamel blocks with known surface areas were obtained from human mandibular incisors. Acidulated phosphate fluoride was applied for 4 min and washed off after additional contact times of 0, 2, 6 and 24 h, respectively. The enamel fluoride concentrations were determined in three successive etch depths before and after extraction in 1 M KOH for ...

The anti-caries effect of semi-annual self-applications of an acidulated-phosphate-fluoride prophylaxis paste to the teeth of children living in non-fluoridated areas was studied. Analysis of exfoliated deciduous teeth revealed an increase in enamel fluoride concentration of 120 ppm at 5 μm in anterior teeth and 15–35 ppm in posterior teeth after each ...

Finn Brudevold: Discovery of Acidulated Phosphate Fluoride in Caries Prevention
Journal of Dental Research, 2011Finn Brudevold was a distinguished leader in dental research, recipient of many honors, and a Past President of IADR. This article traces his scientific career and focuses on his discovery and development of acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) for practical use in caries prevention.

Two acidulated phosphate-fluoride mouthwashes that contained either 100 or 200 ppm of fluoride ion were compared with a placebo mouthwash to determine their anticariogenic effectiveness. The twice-daily use of an acidulated phosphate-fluoride mouthwash that contains a small amount of fluoride is effective in reducing the incidence of dental caries in ...

An acidulated phosphate fluoride paste was applied semiannually by dental hygienists to children 10 to 13 years of age. During the two-year study, exfoliated deciduous teeth were collected for an analysis of fluoride uptake; biopsy specimens of permanent teeth were taken at the end of the study for the same purpose. A 21% caries reduction was found for

Effect of topically applied acidulated phosphate fluoride on dental caries
Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, 1976Abstract A 4‐year clinical trial was conducted to determine the effect on dental caries incidence of the use of acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF 1.23 %). 1,653 Egyptian schoolchildren aged 8 years started the trial. Dental caries was assessed annually by clinical examinations. 1,027 children completed the study.

Sound human enamel and bovine enamel were treated with various acidulated phosphate-fluoride solutions. Fluoride uptake by human and bovine enamel was different for many of the solutions. This difference demonstrates that bovine enamel may not be an adequate substitute for human enamel in fluoride uptake studies.

We evaluated, by proteomic analysis, whether the chemical changes provoked on enamel by acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) application alter the protein composition of acquired enamel pellicle. Enamel slabs, pretreated with distilled water (negative control), phosphoric acid (active control) or APF solution, were immersed in human saliva for pellicle ...
