Urban ants as potential mechanical vectors of pathogenic and antibiotic‐resistant bacteria in a Brazilian hospital

Nine ant taxa were identified in a Brazilian hospital, with Tapinoma melanocephalum and Dorymyrmex brunneus being the most abundant. Eighty‐five percent of collected ants yielded detectable bacterial growth, including clinically relevant genera such as Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Escherichia coli and Pluralibacter.

Bacterial composition of Polygenis (Polygenis) bohlsi bohlsi (Wagner, 1901) (Siphonaptera: Rhopalopsyllidae) associated with Thrichomys fosteri (Rodentia: Echimyidae) in the Brazilian Pantanal wetland

This study characterizes the bacteriome of Polygenis (Polygenis) bohlsi bohlsi fleas collected from free‐living Thrichomys fosteri in the Pantanal region of Brazil. The bacterial microbiota associated with male fleas exhibited greater phylogenetic diversity, and the overall community structure differed between the flea sexes.

Acinetobacter, which is Gram-negative non-fermentated bacilli, is isolated from natural environment and human body, including skin and gastrointestional tracts of both healthy persons and immunocompromised patients. Acinetobacter can cause bacterial infections, such as blood stream infections and health care-associated pneumonia.
