Acoustic-gravity waves in atmospheric and oceanic waveguides

Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2012
A theory of guided propagation of sound in layered, moving fluids is extended to include acoustic-gravity waves (AGWs) in waveguides with piecewise continuous parameters. The orthogonality of AGW normal modes is established in moving and motionless media.

Acoustic-gravity waves in the Earth's ionosphere

Journal of Atmospheric and Solar-Terrestrial Physics, 2008
Taking into account the existence of charged particles in the Earths ionosphere the propagation of acoustic-gravity waves is investigated.

Acoustic‐gravity waves in the upper atmosphere

Reviews of Geophysics, 1974
In this paper we review the theory of acoustic‐gravity waves, the interaction of such waves with the ionosphere, the experimental support for the existence of such waves in the upper atmosphere, and the role played by acoustic‐gravity waves in thermospheric dynamics.

Deep ocean water transport by acoustic-gravity waves

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2014
Acoustic-gravity waves are compression-type waves propagating with amplitudes governed by the restoring force of gravity. They are generated, among others, by wind-wave interactions, surface waves interactions, and submarine earthquakes.

On the Synchronization of Acoustic Gravity Waves

Physica Scripta, 2001
Summary: Using the model proposed by \textit{L. Stenflo} [Phys. Lett. A 222, No. 6, 378--380 (1996)], we demonstrate that acoustic gravity waves found in one region of space can be synchronized with acoustic gravity waves found in another region of space using techniques from modern control theory.

WKB approximation in application to acoustic-gravity waves

Canadian Journal of Physics, 1970
The WKB approximation often provides a useful tool for the study of wave propagation through varying media. The utility of this tool in the case of acoustic–gravity waves, propagating through regions of varying background temperature, has been somewhat questionable because of an ambiguity in the assignment of an appropriate expression for the vertical

The reflection and ducting of atmospheric acoustic-gravity waves

Canadian Journal of Physics, 1965
A simple form is derived for the differential equations governing the propagation of acoustic–gravity waves in an atmosphere whose temperature and horizontal wind velocity vary in an arbitrary manner with height. The condition for wave reflection is discussed in some detail, and the W.K.B. approximate solutions are derived and examined.

Multistability for nonlinear acoustic-gravity waves in a rotating atmosphere

Chaos: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Nonlinear Science, 2021
The multistable states of low-frequency, short-wavelength nonlinear acoustic-gravity waves propagating in a small slope with respect to the vertical ones are explored in a rotating atmosphere. The bifurcation patterns en route to irregular behaviors and the long-term dynamics of the low-order nonlinear model system are studied for varying air Prandtl ...
