Effects of Acoustic Insonation Parameters on Ultrasound Contrast Agent Destruction
Ultrasound in Medicine & Biology, 2008Ultrasound contrast agents (UCAs) are used to enhance the acoustic backscattered intensity of blood and thereby assist the assessment of blood perfusion. Characterization of UCA destruction provides important information for the design of contrast-assisted perfusion imaging.

Physical and Acoustical Properties of Perfluorooctylbromide, An Ultrasound Contrast Agent
INVESTIGATIVE RADIOLOGY, 1990Perfluorooctylbromide (PFOB: C8F17Br) has been shown to be an effective ultrasound contrast agent when incorporated in tissues. The authors have recently demonstrated that PFOB also enhances tissues and Doppler signals during its capillary phase. To help elucidate the physical basis of their observations, the authors compared physical and acoustical ...

2009 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium, 2009
Contrast agents that are available commercially have a polydisperse size distribution. It has been hypothesized that a uniform microbubble diameter might lead to improved imaging sensitivity. Using microfluidics technology that we have developed recently, we have been able to generate contrast agents with a nearly monodisperse size distribution.

Acoustic detection of microbubble destruction in gaseous contrast agents
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1998The destruction of microbubbles from ultrasound contrast agents has recently received much attention because the disintegration can be used to create new imaging modalities and may produce adverse bioeffects as well. Both passive and active acoustic detection techniques were employed in our experiments to investigate the collective and individual ...

Acoustic properties of organic powders as ultrasonic contrast agents
Acoustical Physics, 2011The results of experiments on measuring attenuation and the effective acoustic nonlinear parameter of the second order are given for a suspension of cocoa-powder in water at different concentrations of the suspension. In the process of evaluating the value of the nonlinear parameter the attenuation in the suspension and generation of the second ...

Acoustic fingerprints of photoacoustic contrast agents for molecular imaging
SPIE Proceedings, 2007Protein nanospheres capable of frequency controlled oscillation in response to laser stimulation are presented as contrast agents for photoacoustic imaging. Incident laser energy absorbed by dye-labeled protein nanospheres causes thermoelastically generated sound production.

Ultrasound contrast agents for bleeding detection and acoustic hemostasis
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2005Objective: To investigate the application of ultrasound contrast agents (UCA) in improving both therapeutic and diagnostic aspects of ultrasound-guided High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) therapy. Methods: Incisions (3 cm long, 0.5 cm deep) were made in rabbit livers (in anterior surface for HIFU treatment, or posterior surface for bleeding ...

Acoustical and physical dynamics of phagocytosed microbubble contrast agents
2000 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Proceedings. An International Symposium (Cat. No.00CH37121), 2002Ultrasound contrast agents are captured and phagocytosed by activated neutrophils adherent to the venular wall in regions of inflammation. In order to determine the physical and acoustical behavior of phagocytosed microbubbles, we assessed the responses of both phagocytosed and free microbubbles with direct optical and acoustical observation.

Ultrasound contrast agents phagocytosed by neutrophils demonstrate acoustic activity
1999 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium. Proceedings. International Symposium (Cat. No.99CH37027), 2003Ultrasound contrast agents are microbubbles composed of a thin lipid or albumin shell filled with air or a high molecular weight gas. These microbubbles are used for contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEU) assessment of organ perfusion. In regions of inflammation, microbubbles are phagocytosed intact by activated neutrophils adherent to the venular wall ...

Acoustic modulation of contrast agent for hepatic flow differentiation
IEEE Symposium on Ultrasonics, 2003, 2004Current methods of liver metastasis diagnosis involve an intravenous (IV) bolus injection of CT contrast agent, with detection in the liver parenchyma using a time differential in enhancement. Recent studies have shown that ultrasound measurements of time to initial enhancement and time to and level of peak enhancements with an IV bolus of contrast ...
