Maximizing eDNA detections of rare marine organisms: A case study of a delphinid species

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Environmental DNA (eDNA) is an emerging tool for surveying marine organisms. Advances in molecular assay designs and bioinformatic methods provide new opportunities for detecting rare species; however, overcoming methodological challenges of rare species detection remains an important obstacle for the widespread deployment of eDNA methods for ...

Individual bird identification by modelling temporal structure in bioacoustic embeddings

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Identifying individual animals from vocalizations is an emerging research area in computational bioacoustics. This non‐invasive approach reduces reliance on physical capture and tagging for wildlife monitoring. Recent advances in this area leverage deep learning and bioacoustic foundation models adapted from species‐level classifiers. However,

WAH‐i: Optimising microphone array geometry for customised localisation accuracy

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, EarlyView.
Abstract Accurate spatial localisation of free‐flying echolocating bats is foundational for resolving fine‐scale flight and echolocation behaviour, prey interception and spatial decision‐making in natural environments. Acoustic localisation using microphone arrays is widely employed for this purpose, yet array geometries in field studies are typically ...

Taxonomic, Phylogenetic and Functional Diversity of Mammals Across a Nationwide Protected Area Network

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
Using camera‐trap data from 26 protected across Tanzania, we show that greater landscape heterogeneity and stronger protection are associated with higher mammal species richness and, in turn, functionally and phylogenetically richer mammal assemblages. Greater landscape heterogeneity appears to favour generalist species while stronger protection seems ...

Impacts of the Australian Black Summer Fires on Bat Occupancy and Activity: The Role of Traits and Conservation Status

open access: yesAnimal Conservation, EarlyView.
The response of bats to Australian megafires was assessed one year after fires. High severity fire had a negative effect on total bat activity and the activity or occupancy of six species, while a further 10 species was not associated with any fire covariate. Overall, bat responses were complex and not easily predicted by traits alone.
