A negative high-quality, high-resolution, contrast-enhanced MRI scan is excellent evidence that a patient does not have an AN. Most nerve sheath tumors have a characteristic appearance, and when a tumor is detected there is seldom any doubt as to the identity of the lesion.

To the Editor . —With great interest I read the paper "Alteration of the Orbicularis Oculi Reflex by Acoustic Neuroma" by Drs. Lynn W. Lyon and Maurice W. Van Allen of Iowa City (Arch Otolaryngol96:100-103, 1972). In this article they reported a "new" technique which they suggest might be useful for the early diagnosis of acoustic neuroma.
