Mechanoregulatory Effects of Cell‐Scale Microwells on Epithelial Cell Phenotype

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In small polycaprolactone microwells, A549 epithelial cells span well edges, in contrast to cells growing on flat substrates. Focal adhesion sites (yellow) concentrate at topographic boundaries, while cytoskeletal tension (magenta stress fibers) is transmitted to the nucleus (blue), reducing nuclear sphericity.

From Clinic to Computation: Multiscale Bioengineering Strategies for Durable Biological Aortic Valve Replacements

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bioprosthetic aortic valves have revolutionized the treatment of aortic stenosis, but their durability is limited by structural valve deterioration (SVD). This review focuses on the pericardial tissue at the heart of these valves, examining how its mechanical properties and calcification drive fatigue and failure.

The effect of cutting direction and water based varnish type on sound absorption coefficient in some native wood species

open access: yesMaderas: Ciencia y Tecnología
Noise which could be defined as disturbing sound, is becoming a major problem depending with developing technology. Controlling the noise helps raising the quality of life to higher levels. Although the intensity of the noise is not at a level that will

Solitary Dust--Acoustic Waves in a Plasma with Two-Temperature Ions and Distributed Grain Size

open access: yes, 2008
The propagation of weakly nonlinear dust--acoustic waves in a dusty plasma containing two ion species with different temperatures is explored. The nonlinear equations describing both the quadratic and cubic plasma nonlinearities are derived.

The Cuttlebone Blueprint for Multifunctional Metamaterials: Design Taxonomy, Functional Decoupling, and Future Horizons

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Cuttlebone‐inspired metamaterials exploit a septum‐wall architecture to achieve excellent mechanical and functional properties. This review classifies existing designs into direct biomimetic, honeycomb‐type, and strut‐type architectures, summarizes governing design principles, and presents a decoupled design framework for interpreting multiphysical ...

Correlates of linguistic rhythm in the speech signal [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Spoken languages have been classified by linguists according to their rhythmic properties, and psycholinguists have relied on this classification to account for infants’ capacity to discriminate languages.

High Frequency dynamics in metallic glasses

open access: yes, 2006
Using Inelastic X-ray Scattering we studied the collective dynamics of the glassy alloy Ni$_{33}$Zr$_{67}$ in the first pseudo Brillouin zone, an energy-momentum region still unexplored in metallic glasses.
