Remote acoustic sensing methods for studies in oceanology

Ocean Science Journal, 2006
In this paper, the lines of investigation on a problem of the development of remote acoustic sensing methods in oceanology are formulated. This paper summarizes the results of investigations into the possibilities for monitoring temperature and flow fields in shallow seas.

Acoustic Remote Sensing in Maritime Archaeology

2011
This article offers an introduction to acoustic remote sensing. In shipwreck studies, acoustic remote sensing has traditionally been used for reconnaissance surveys and for site relocation. With the advent of higher-resolution sonar systems, the focus in shipwreck studies has shifted toward site reconstruction and studies of site formation.

Acoustical Remote Sensing in the Atmosphere

1992
Acoustical echo sounding is an important method to study flow patterns in the lower atmosphere. It is particularly useful for applications which require higher temporal and spatial resolution than obtainable by balloon borne radio sondes or other conventional observation methods.

Monitoring precipitation using underwater acoustic remote sensing

2003
Abstract Multi-frequency measurements of underwater noise offer the possibility of estimating environmental parameters to useful accuracy and, specifically, of separately providing wind speed and rainfall data. The technique and the experimental set-up are described and results presented for several locations under different conditions.

Acoustic remote sensing of ocean-atmosphere interactions

1997
At this step one may remark that acoustic remote sensing of the MABL and some ocean surface properties (surface roughness, wind, precipitation) is mature and a lot of progress has been made. However as all these techniques are affected by human activity noises (ship noise and platform noise) and marine life noises (fishes...) and platform airflow ...

Model-Based Acoustic Remote Sensing of Seafloor Characteristics

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2011
The characterization of seafloor sediments by acoustic means is carried out using normal-incidence, dual-frequency, single-beam echo sounder backscatter data at 20 locations in the western continental shelf of India. A temporal backscatter model for a finite duration of transmitted signal is used to estimate the values of four sediment parameters ...

Acoustic remote sensing for seabed archaeology

2021
In maritime archaeology, acoustic remote sensing technology has traditionally been used to locate and document inundated archaeological sites and shipwrecks. These methods are constantly evolving as technology advances, allowing for detailed spatial investigation and interpretation of submerged archaeological features. In the last decade, the advent of

Acoustic remote sensing instrumentation for sediment transport research

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1994
Sediment transport in the oceanic bottom boundary layer involves threefold coupling among: (1) the motion of sediment grains; (2) the response of the bed; and (3) the fluid forcing. The appeal of acoustic remote sensing methods is that in principle all three components of the problem can be addressed with minimal disturbance to the system.

Acoustic remote sensing of high‐frequency internal waves

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1979
A method is presented to extract internal wave information from acoustic reverberation data. The method is a tracking scheme which estimates the mean vertical motion of acoustic scatterers and infers the internal oscillations. Good coherence is found between isotherm depth histories and the tracking output for frequencies of 0.5–10 cph, especially in ...

The Remote Sensing of Factors Influencing Underwater Acoustics

1981
The marine factors influencing sound propagation in sea water are listed and their remote sensing is concisely reviewed in the light of presently available instrumentation, processing, and oceanographic modelling.
