Locating the acoustic source in an anisotropic plate

Structural Health Monitoring, 2011
By analyzing the arrival times of guided waves, the acoustic source in a plate is predicted. Solving this problem is important for continuous health monitoring of structures. Several techniques based on the triangulation principle have been proposed for this purpose but they do not work for anisotropic plates.

Methods for passively locating an acoustic source

ICASSP '77. IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2005
The maximum likelihood (ML) processor is presented for passively estimating range and bearing to an acoustic source. The source signal is observed for a finite time duration at several sensors in the presence of uncorrelated noise. When the speed of sound in an isovelocity medium and the sensor positions are known the ML estimator for position ...

Acoustic emission Bayesian source location: Onset time challenge

Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing, 2019
Abstract Robust identification of the most accurate observed input data among a pool of observations is key in modeling and decision making. A statistically biased observed measurement deteriorates the predictive power of a model and affects decision-making ability based on the prediction of the model.

Measuring Jet Noise Source Locations with Acoustic Beamforming

53rd AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting, 2015
Numerous methods have been used by the aeroacoustics community to locate noise sources of different frequencies in subsonic jets. These include: acoustic mirrors, microphone arrays, two-microphone methods, causality correlation and coherence techniques, acoustic beamforming, and automated source breakdown.

A new method for locating acoustic emission source

2010 2nd International Conference on Advanced Computer Control, 2010
In the research of locating sudden acoustic emission source the transducers are generally arranged in special geometries in order to derive the equations which give acoustic emission source location, and to make the calculations simple. In this paper a new method for locating plane acoustic emission source is proposed by setting the transducers in a ...

Locating an Acoustic Source Using Low-Cost Hardware

2017
The availability of cheap but powerful sensors and signal processing hardware allows the solution of problems, which previously could only be solved at high costs and efforts. In this paper we describe an approach to locate an acoustic sound source by three low cost microphones and operational amplifiers in combination with a simple microcontroller ...

Acoustic source location using a microphone array

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2003
An apparatus and method in a video conference system provides accurate determination of the position of a speaking participant by measuring the difference in arrival times of a sound originating from the speaking participant, using as few as four microphones in a 3-dimensional configuration.

Acoustic emission source location on a cylindrical surface

NDT & E International, 1993
Acoustic emission (AE) is a stress wave, generated in a structural material when it is stimulated by perturbations. One of the important features of this technique is to detect the location of the AE source in the structure from the differences in the times of arrival of stress waves at several sensors placed on it. A generalized mathematical formalism

Acoustic source location of partial discharges in transformers

SPIE Proceedings, 2010
Acoustic emission monitoring is often used in the diagnosis of electrical and mechanical incipient faults in high voltage apparatus. Partial discharges are a major source of insulation failure in power transformers and the differentiation from other sources of acoustic emissions is of the utmost importance.

Acoustic Emission Source Location Using Lamb Wave Modes

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 1997
This paper describes the development of a technique based on acoustic emission (AE) technology that can be used for global nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of steel structures. This will also be useful for the subsequent local inspection used to further monitor cracking, defective connections, retrofit measures, and so forth.
