Impedance-Acoustic Tomography

In this work we present a new hybrid imaging technique that combines electrical impedance tomography (EIT) with acoustic tomography. The novel technique makes use of the fact that the absorbed electrical energy inside the body raises its temperature, thus leading to expansion effects.

Computed Tomography of Acoustic Neuroma

Review of computed tomographic (CT) scans of 49 consecutive patients with surgically excised acoustic neuromas revealed positive scans in 80% following contrast enhancement, with 20% false negative scans. All tumors over 2 cm in diameter were shown by optimal scans with contrast enhancement.

Computed Tomography of Acoustic Neurinoma

Thirty-seven patients with 39 acoustic neurinomas were studied with computed tomography (CT). Six tumors (15%) were seen on the nonenhanced scans and infusion of contrast material demonstrated 23 more tumors. Ten tumors (26%) were not seen as soft-tissue masses on the enhanced CT scans.

Acoustic tomography of the atmosphere allows one to reconstruct the three-dimensional temperature and velocity fields and to monitor their evolution in time. It was first employed in the 1990s.

Acoustic tomography of the atmosphere

Sodar and RASS are examples of remote sensing techniques used widely around the world today which are based on acoustic propagation and scattering. Acoustic tomography of the atmosphere, in comparison, has been used to a much lesser extent. However, acoustic tomography will probably be used more in the atmosphere in coming years.

Seismic wide-angle imaging using ship-towed acoustic sources and networks of ocean bottom seismographs is a common technique for exploring earth structure beneath the oceans. In these studies, the recorded data are dominated by acoustic waves propagating as reverberations in the water column.

Very low data rate burst telemetry for long-range deep-ocean applications is discussed. Energy efficiency, propagation coherence, and waveform coding, together with transmitter constraints, influenced the design of proposed buoy-to-buoy and buoy-to-shore systems.
