Controlling sound with acoustic metamaterials

Nature Reviews Materials, 2016
Acoustic metamaterials can manipulate and control sound waves in ways that are not possible in conventional materials. Metamaterials with zero, or even negative, refractive index for sound offer new possibilities for acoustic imaging and for the control of sound at subwavelength scales.

Acoustic sound localisation

Proceedings of the 30th Australian Conference on Computer-Human Interaction, 2018
This paper reports on preliminary design and testing of an acoustic spatial localisation system capable of creating detailed two dimensional noise visualisations (heat-maps). The work has developed alongside a range of 360 Ambisonic audio projects including dynamic binaural synthesis, high-resolution head-tracking systems, loudspeaker arrays for ...

Acoustic analysis of trill sounds

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2012
In this paper, the acoustic–phonetic characteristics of steady apical trills—trill sounds produced by the periodic vibration of the apex of the tongue—are studied. Signal processing methods, namely, zero-frequency filtering and zero-time liftering of speech signals, are used to analyze the excitation source and the resonance characteristics of the ...

Combined Radar-Acoustic Sounding System

Applied Optics, 1972
Acoustic pulses at 85 Hz (4 m) directed vertically into the lower atmosphere have been tracked by a 36.8-MHz (8-m) pulse doppler radar. Signal-to-noise power ratios in excess of 10 dB were obtained to a height of 1.5 km in the initial tests under conditions of calm winds.
