Correlation between metabolic depression and ecdysteroid peak during embryogenesis of the desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Orthoptera: Acrididae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2000
Respiratory metabolism of developing eggs of Schistocerca gregaria has been individually monitored by means of scanning microrespirography. The freshly oviposited eggs consumed 7 nl of O2 /min./egg (50 µl O2/g/h) while the pharate 1st instar larvae ...

Insects as Food and Feed Source: A Comprehensive Review on Nutritional Value, Food Safety Concern, Environmental Benefits, Economic Potential, Technological Innovations, Challenges, and Future Prospects

open access: yesFood Frontiers, Volume 6, Issue 6, Page 2591-2646, November 2025.
Edible insects offer a sustainable protein source, requiring fewer resources than traditional livestock. Despite challenges, they have the potential to enhance food security and sustainability for a growing global population. ABSTRACT As the world faces an escalating protein crisis amid climate change, population growth, and resource scarcity, edible ...

Age Structure and Feeding of the Neotropical Grasshopper Cornops aquaticum (Bruner) (Orthoptera: Acrididae) on Water Hyacinth. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We aimed to evaluate the variation in the age structure of Cornops aquaticum (Bruner) population and its relation to the host plant biomass and the feeding of the different age classes of this grasshopper on the Water Hyacinth Eichhornia crassipes along ...

Spatial Interpolation in Applied Insect Ecology: A Review, Including Guidelines and Datasets for Practical Use

open access: yesJournal of Applied Entomology, Volume 149, Issue 9, Page 1319-1334, November 2025.
ABSTRACT Spatial interpolation represents a fundamental approach in applied insect ecology, offering insight into species distributions and supporting biodiversity analysis, pest management and disease vector mapping. Insects—including important pollinators—face escalating threats due to habitat loss, climate change and anthropogenic pressures. As data‐

Investigating Social Immunity in Swarming Locusts via a Triple Animal–Robot–Pathogen Hybrid Interaction

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, Volume 7, Issue 10, October 2025.
This study explores social immunity in gregarious locusts using a groundbreaking animal–robot–pathogen interaction model. By comparing locust responses to biomimetic agents mimicking healthy and infected individuals, significant behavioral changes are revealed.

open access: yesCaldasia, 2001

Crepitation in Schistocerca americana (Orthoptera: Acrididae)

open access: yesJournal of Orthoptera Research, 1996
Schistocerca americana males were found to crepitate during interactions with other males in the field. More research will need to be Otte (1970) compiled observations on the mating behavior of approximately 100 species of grasshoppers. The mating behavior of Schistocerca lineata (Scudder) is the only member of its genus treated.
