Compound Hypoxia With Heat or Acidification Stress Induces Synergistic and Additive Effects on Coral Physiology

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology Communications, Volume 1, Issue 3, September 2026.
Multi‐stressor experiments on three coral species demonstrate hypoxia produces mostly additive effects with acidification but synergistically amplifies physiological stress under elevated temperatures. As global and local environmental change increase compound stress events on coral reefs, distinguishing hypoxia‐driven effects and interactive stressor ...

Assisted Gene Flow Yields Physiologically Robust Acropora palmata With Novel Allelic and Transcriptomic Profiles

open access: yesEvolutionary Applications, Volume 19, Issue 9, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Assisted gene flow (AGF) is a conservation approach that facilitates the spread of alleles and may accelerate the recovery of genetically depauperate populations. The threatened Caribbean coral Acropora palmata is approaching regional extinction within the western Atlantic partly due to increasing water temperatures associated with global ...

High clonality in Acropora palmata and Acropora cervicornis populations of Guadeloupe, French Lesser Antilles

open access: yes, 2015
Since the 1980s, population densities of Acroporidae have dramatically declined in the Caribbean Sea. Quantitative censuses of Acroporidae provide information on the number of colonies (i.e.

Experimental antibiotic treatment identifies potential pathogens of white band disease in the endangered Caribbean coral Acropora cervicornis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Coral diseases have been increasingly reported over the past few decades and\ud are a major contributor to coral decline worldwide. The Caribbean, in particular,\ud has been noted as a hotspot for coral disease, and the aptly named white\ud syndromes ...

DIVERSITY OF CULTURABLE BACTERIAL COMMUNITY ASSOCIATED WITH THE CORAL Galaxea fascicularis FROM UJUNG KULON, INDONESIA [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
Coral reefs are the most diverse marine ecosystems; however, little is known about their microbialdiversity in these ecosystems. The present study is aimed at investigating the general insights into the diversity of the bacterial community associated ...

Spatial Strategies in Coral Transplantation: A Systematic Review of Clustered Versus Widespread Configurations

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 8, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Active coral reef restoration incorporates ecological engineering principles. Yet, the spatial arrangement of transplanted colonies, one of the few design parameters directly controlled by practitioners, remains poorly explored empirically. We conducted a systematic review following PRISMA guidelines to evaluate how clustered (high‐density ...

Twenty years of change in a southeast Florida Acropora cervicornis thicket

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Acropora cervicornis historically exists in large, dense thickets that provide a functionally unique habitat. However, populations in the Caribbean have declined by up to 98%, frequently isolating extant colonies.

Potential Invasive Indo‐Pacific Acropora in a Coral Reef of Venezuela: A Contribution to Their Morphological and Molecular Knowledge

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 3, March 2026.
We report the first record of a non‐native hermatypic coral in Venezuela, exhibiting biological traits characteristic of invasive species. The coral is a member of the genus Acropora (Scleractinia: Acroporidae), native to the Indo‐Pacific. This non‐native petrous coral occurred in a reef of the Morrocoy National Park, in the southern Caribbean.

Evaluating Acropora cervicornis Growth and Survivorship in a Line Nursery [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Acropora cervicornis and A. palmata were once dominant, reef-building corals of Caribbean reefs. Over the last several decades, population declines of Caribbean Acropora have been dramatic, and both species are now listed as “Threatened” under the United

Genetic Diversity of Sexually Propagated Corals Is Maintained From the Aquarium to the Reef

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 35, Issue 5, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Amidst global reef declines, large‐scale coral aquaculture is being developed to support reef intervention. Genetic diversity underpins population resilience and therefore it is critical that aquaculture methods maintain diversity. However, it remains unclear how genetic diversity of coral progeny is shaped by (1) parental genetic composition,
