Effects of Diverse Acrylates on the Electro-Optical Performance of Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal Films

open access: yesMolecules
This study investigated the influence of different functional groups on the electro-optical properties of polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films. Twelve acrylate monomers with functional groups like amino, halogen, and double-bond were introduced ...

Partitioning of Functional Monomers in Emulsion Polymerization: Distribution of Carboxylic Acid and Hydroxy (Meth)acrylate Monomers between Water and Polymers

open access: yes, 2016
We have studied the distribution of vinyl acid and hydroxy (meth)acrylate monomers between water and a variety of styrene, acrylate, and methacrylate homopolymers and copolymers.

Hybrid Additive Manufacturing of Highly Stretchable Bottlebrush Polymer Nanocomposites by Decoupled Extrusion and Photopatterning

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A Hybrid Direct Ink Writing–Digital Light Processing (HDD) strategy decouples material extrusion from shape definition, enabling high‐fidelity additive manufacturing of highly viscous, yield‐stress polymer nanocomposites. Excess ink acts as a removable, self‐supporting scaffold, allowing fabrication of unsupported and embedded complex architectures ...

Liquid Crystal Elastomer Actuator Matrix for Large Area Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
A scalable approach is used to manufacture a digitally‐controllable, 2D 5 × 5 actuator matrix. The elements of the matrix are produced by direct ink writing of a liquid crystal elastomer ‘artificial muscle’ on large‐area flexible thin‐film heaters. In optimizing the low‐power actuators, multiple heater designs and substrate materials are investigated ...

In Situ Photopolymerization of Smectic B Liquid‐Crystalline Electrolytes from Mesogenic Phosphate–Diacrylate/Ionic Liquid Complexes for High‐Performance Soft Ionic Actuators

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A flexible liquid‐crystalline electrolyte membrane via in situ photopolymerization of a phosphate‐functionalized mesogen, ionic liquid, and diacrylate monomer is developed. The resulting smectic B (SmB)‐phase structure enables 2D ion transport with high conductivity (10−4 S cm−1).

Termination kinetics in free-radical bulk terpolymerization the systems methyl acrylate - Butyl acrylate - dodecyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate - butyl methacrylate - dodecyl methacrylate

open access: yes, 1999
Termination rate coefficients, kt, for the terpolymerization of mixtures containing the three acrylates: methyl, butyl, and dodecyl acrylate or the corresponding members of the methacrylate family: methyl, butyl, and dodecyl methacrylate, have been ...

Synthesis and mesophase properties of block and random copolymers of electroactive and liquid crystalline monomers

open access: yes, 2005
Homo-polymers and random co-polymers of electroactive and liquid crystalline monomers, namely 3-thienylmethyl methacrylate (MTM) and 6-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-oxy)hexyl acrylate (LC6), were prepared by conventional free radical polymerization.
