Insomnia and nightmares are common symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in addition to wakeful symptoms of reexperiencing traumatic events and avoidance of stimuli associated with the trauma. Sleep disturbance is frequently, though not often, the principal focus of therapy in PTSD.

Characteristics of patients with hypersomnia by actigraphy

To the Editor: I read with interest the paper by Filardi et al. [1]. By using actigraphy, the authors compared several characteristics of 39 patients with narcolepsy Type 1 (NT1), 24 patients with idiopathic hypersomnia (IH), and 30 controls. The authors used the criteria of International Classification of Sleep Disorders – Third Edition.

However, the small amount of literature on validation with insomniacs has revealed an actigraphy bias toward overscoring sleep.
