Characterization of a dextranase produced by an oral strain of Actinomyces israelii [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1975
A dextranase-producing, gram-positive, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacterium isolated from human dental plaque was identified as Actinomyces israeli. Although the extracellular dextranase (EC 3.2.1.11) formed by this microbe appeared to be constitutively produced, the bacterium did not utilize the reaction products as a carbon source during growth.

Actinomyces israelii: a rare cause of thoracic empyema

open access: yesTuberkuloz ve Toraks, 2011
Actinomyces israelii usually causes chronic suppurative and granulomatous infections. Isolated pleural effusion due to Actinomycosis is rare. This report describes an unusual case of thoracic empyema caused by A. israelii with sudden onset and rapid deterioration that failed to respond to chest tube drainage and antibiotherapy.

Unveiling Global Diversity of Patescibacteriota and Functional Interactions with Host Microbes

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 11, 23 February 2026.
Patescibacteriota represents a diverse group of ultra‐small epibiotic bacteria, which is largely overlooked. By integrating ribosomal protein S3‐based community profiling with MAG‐based metabolic potential analyses, this study provides new insights into their distribution, diversity, and potential interactions with other bacteria across diverse ...

Concurrent Hepatic Abscess and Pleural Empyema due to Actinomyces odontolyticus After Recent COVID‐19 Infection: A Case Report

open access: yesCase Reports in Infectious Diseases, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Introduction Actinomycosis is a rare, slow‐progressing infection mimicking malignancies by penetrating mucosal barriers and spreading across anatomical planes. While typically affecting the cervicofacial area, it can also involve the thorax and abdomen, with simultaneous hepatic and pulmonary involvement being particularly rare.
