Physical Principles Involved in Transistor Action*

Bell System Technical Journal, 1949
The transitor in the form described herein consists of two-point contact electrodes, called emitter and collector, placed in close proximity on the upper face of a small block of germanium. The base electrode, the third element of the triode, is a large area low resistance contact on the lower face.

Physical Action Without Interaction

Erkenntnis, 2009
In “Action without interaction” (2005) I showed that one might act on a physical system (there, a particle), without interacting with it, by the procedure of making it disappear. This paper presents further extensions and a critique of that result.

Wave action flux: a physical interpretation

Journal of Fluid Mechanics, 1998
Steady, gravity water waves on a constant-over-depth current, progressing over a slowly varying bed, are studied with the purpose of connecting the wave action flux concept with conventional energy flux considerations. The analysis is two-dimensional and dissipation is neglected.

Physicalism, Action, and Explanation

1993
Abstract Naturalism, construed broadly, states that whatever exists is part of the natural order of things. One common understanding of the natural order implies that whatever is natural is explainable, at least in principle, by the natural sciences.

How are actions physically implemented?

2009
This chapter focuses on the interdisciplinary discussion between cognitive psychologists and neuroscientists on how actions, the results of decision processes, are implemented. After surveying the approaches used in action implementation research, we analyze the contributions of these different approaches in more detail.

The Epistemology of Physical Action

1992
Abstract In my book The Will I put forward a dual aspect theory of physical action along the following lines. The theory begins with the claim that whenever we perform an action an event of the type ‘will’ occurs, and that the act in question is identical with that event.
