An activity description language for activity recognition [PDF]

open access: yes2017 International Conference on Internet of Things, Embedded Systems and Communications (IINTEC), 2017
Activity recognition aims at recognizing and understanding the movements, actions, and objectives of mobile objects. These objects can be humans, animals, or simple artefacts. Many important and critical applications such as surveillance or health care require some form of (human) activity recognition.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Nitric oxide-induced activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase alpha2 subunit attenuates IKappaB kinase activity and inflammatory responses in endothelial cells

open access: yes, 2011
Background: In endothelial cells, activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) has been linked with anti-inflammatory actions but the events downstream of kinase activation are not well understood.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Paths reunited: initiation of the classical and lectin pathways of complement activation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Understanding the structural organisation and mode of action of the initiating complex of the classical pathway of complement activation (C1) has been a central goal in complement biology since its isolation almost 50 years ago.

Promotion of physical activity guidelines and behavior change

open access: yesJournal of Physical Fitness and Sports Medicine, 2015
Physical activity guidelines have been published by governments to increase physical activity at a national level. Such guidelines commonly include behavior change techniques.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Receptor-specific regulation of phosphatidylinositol 3'-kinase activation by the protein tyrosine phosphatase Shp2

open access: yes, 2002
Receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) play distinct roles in multiple biological systems. Many RTKs transmit similar signals, raising questions about how specificity is achieved.

The Role of Cytokines in Activation of Coagulation and Fibrinolysis in Dengue Shock Syndrome [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
In a prospective clinical study of 50 patients with Dengue Shock Syndrome (DSS), we investigated the association of tumor necrosis factor- (TNF-), interleukin-1 (IL-1), IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra), and IL-6 with activation markers of coagulation
