Optimal Scheduling for Active Cell Balancing

2019 IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (RTSS), 2019
Active cell balancing is performed to minimize the variation in the charge levels of the individual cells in a high-power battery pack, to improve its usable capacity. The process of charge equalization is carried out by scheduling pairs of cells to transfer charge over a hardware circuit.

Comparison of passive cell balancing and active cell balancing for automotive batteries

2011 IEEE Vehicle Power and Propulsion Conference, 2011
This paper presents a quantitative performance analysis of a conventional passive cell balancing method and a proposed active cell balancing method for automotive batteries. The proposed active cell balancing method was designed to perform continuous cell balancing during charge and discharge with high balancing current.

Rapid Analysis of Active Cell Balancing Circuits

IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems, 2017
Active cell balancing improves the performance of a battery pack by transferring charge from one cell to another. Associated design questions require multiple simulations with 100 cells over several hours. Since the most efficient transfer methods switch between phases in the kilohertz range, these simulations require high computational effort or ...

Active Cell Balancing using Microcontroller

2018 International Conference on Power Energy, Environment and Intelligent Control (PEEIC), 2018
The presented paper introduces an idea for active cell balancing using microcontroller. This uses one current sensor and two voltage sensor to gather data required for the proposed active balancing method. The individual cell measurement is required for Li-Ion batteries in many applications to prevent exothermic reaction.

Battery Management Module with Active Balancing and Cell Switching

2018 6th International Conference on Control Engineering & Information Technology (CEIT), 2018
The lithium ion type battery has become commercially more popular than the traditional battery and the usage market has increased. The main reason for this expansion and increase is that it has a high voltage value and a high energy density in a single cell. In addition to having these advantages, lithium ion batteries have usage limits.

WiP Abstract: A Novel Strategy for Active Cell Balancing

2016 ACM/IEEE 7th International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems (ICCPS), 2016
Cell imbalance in batteries results in the degradation of capacity delivery of the battery. Battery Management System (BMS) uses passive or active balancing techniques to counter this. The strength of a battery measured in terms of State- of-Charge (SoC), is limited by the capacity of its weakest cell leading to under-utilized cells and reduced ...

Synthesis of Active Cell Balancing Architectures for Battery Packs

IEEE Transactions on Computer-Aided Design of Integrated Circuits and Systems, 2016
Active balancing architectures effectively increase the efficiency of large battery packs by equalizing charge between cells. For this purpose, a balancing circuit and appropriate control scheme have to be designed to enable the charge transfer via energy storage elements such as inductors.

Optimal Dimensioning and Control of Active Cell Balancing Architectures

IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, 2019
Active cell balancing is the process of equalizing the State-of-Charge (SoC) of all cells in a series-connected battery pack via charge transfers. While several balancing architectures and equalization strategies exist in the literature, optimization of the circuit components in a balancing architecture has not been sufficiently studied so far ...

Active cell balancing circuit for series-connected battery cells

2015 9th International Conference on Power Electronics and ECCE Asia (ICPE-ECCE Asia), 2015
This paper proposes a cell-balancing circuit for a series-connected battery string. The proposed cell equalizer is an active cell-balancing circuit with a multi-winding transformer based on a forward DC-DC converter. The advantage of the proposed cell balancing circuit is that it can use less number of active power switches than other forward converter

Integrated activation of MAP3Ks balances cell fate in response to stress

Journal of Cellular Biochemistry, 2007
AbstractIn vivo, tissues and organs are exposed to numerous stressors that require cells to respond appropriately for viability and homeostasis. Cells respond to these stressors, which range from UV irradiation, heat shock, chemicals, and changes in osmolality, to oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines, by activating pathways that protect cells ...
