Gas Hydrates at Two Sites of an Active Continental Margin
Proceedings of SPE California Regional Meeting, 1985ABSTRACT Sediment containing gas hydrates from two distant Deep Sea Drilling Project sites (565 and 568), located about 670 km apart or the landward flank of the Middle America Trench, was studied to determine the geochemical conditions that characterize the occurrence of gas hydrates.

Active Continental Margins and Island Arcs
1974Certain regions of the earth are characterized by unusually high geophysical and geological activity, exemplified by deep earthquakes, volcanism, and mountain building. These regions form two fairly continuous belts, one around the Pacific Ocean (Fig. 1), the other extending through Asia to the Mediterranean Ocean.

Geomorphology, 2014
Abstract The Palomares Margin, an NNE–SSW segment of the South Iberian Margin located between the Alboran and the Algerian–Balearic basins, is dissected by two major submarine canyon systems: the Gata (in the South) and the Alias–Almanzora (in the North). New swath bathymetry, side-scan sonar images, accompanied by 5 kHz and TOPAS subbottom profiles,

Neotectonic Activity of Atlantic Inner Continental Margin: ABSTRACT
AAPG Bulletin, 1981ABSTRACT A consistent pattern of neotectonic activity along the inner edge of the Atlantic continental margin is emerging from new data on earthquake activity, contemporary vertical movement and geologic structure. Seismic activity, as shown by both historic and instrumental data, is concentrated in embayments on the Atlantic coastal ...

Rift, Magmatic Activization, and Continental Margin Regimes
1980The rift regime is similar to the orogenic and is sometimes considered a variety of the latter. A number of specific features, however, lead us to classify it in an autonomous category.

Evolution of an active continental margin as exemplified by the Alpine history of the Caucasus
Tectonophysics, 1977Abstract A plate-tectonics model of the Alpine evolution of the Caucasus is suggested. According to the model, in the Jurassic-Neocomian the Caucasian territory comprised the shelf of the East European platform, the marginal sea of the Great Caucasus, the Pontian-Transcaucasian island arc, the Anatolian-Minor Caucasian oceanic basin (Tethys) and the ...

Distribution of Oil and Gas on Active Continental Margins: ABSTRACT
AAPG Bulletin, 1984Accumulation of oil and gas in an area depends on amount and type of organic matter, adequate temperatures for generation, suitable trapping configuration, and correct timing of events. All these factors can vary considerably across active margins of both island arc and continental (Andean) type.

Structural variability at the active continental marginoff southernmost Chile
Journal of Geodynamics, 1999Abstract Newly collected seismic reflection data offshore Southernmost Chile, between 54°Sand 57°S, reveal the complex tectonic setting of this active continental margin. This region is stillpoorly known, because frequent bad weather conditions among these latitudes have prevented theacquisition of geological and geophysical data.

This paper derives an estimate of the average chemical composition of the Paleozoic Andean basement, based on the geological evolution and from compilations of geochemical and isotopic analyses of Early to Late Paleozoic age metamorphic and magmatic rocks between 21° and 27°S. Geochemical and isotopic data indicate that recycling of the Early Paleozoic

Abstract Subduction zones with deep seismicity are believed to be associated with the descending branches of convective flows in the mantle and are subordinated to them. Therefore, the position of subduction zones can be considered as relatively fixed with respect to the steady-state system of convective flows.
