Nonlinear Active Earth Pressure Distribution Based on Coulomb's Theory

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2011
On the basis of coulomb’s concept that the active earth pressure against the back of a retaining wall is due to the thrust force exerted by a sliding wedge of soil between the back of the wall and a plane which passes through the bottom edge of the wall and has an inclination of θ, two basis differential equations of first order are set up by ...

Active Earth Pressure on Walls with Base Projection

Journal of Geotechnical Engineering, 1990
This paper presents the effect of base projection on the active earth pressure. It was found that the failure wedge is bounded by two surfaces, one of them intersecting into the soil and the ground surface and the other one intersecting the wall. The inclination of the first surface is independent of the wall friction and the length of base projection.

Active Earth Pressure with Linear and Nonlinear Failure Criteria

Geotechnical and Geological Engineering, 2017
Most conventional calculation methods of active earth pressure behind a retaining wall are mainly based on the linear Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion. However, numerous experimental data indicate that various kinds of soils obey the nonlinear failure criterion.

Comparative study of different theories on active earth pressure

Journal of Central South University, 2012
Determination of distribution and magnitude of active earth pressure is crucial in retaining wall designs. A number of analytical theories on active earth pressure were presented. Yet, there are limited studies on comparison between the theories.

Effects of Strain Localization on Seismic Active Earth Pressures

Journal of Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering, 2010
An improved method based on pseudostatic and limit-equilibrium analysis is proposed for evaluating seismic (static plus dynamic) active earth pressures induced by backfill behind movable rigid retaining walls. The proposed method can take into account the effects of strain localization and postpeak shear resistance reduction in the dense backfill soil ...
