Light-controlled flows in active fluids [PDF]

open access: yesNature Physics, 2016
The ability of phototactic microorganisms to move towards optimal light intensities is exploited to generate fluid flows on scales several orders larger than the swimmers themselves. These flows are shown to function as hydrodynamic tweezers.

Microbiome‐blood–brain barrier interactions in aging — mechanisms and therapeutic potential

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Aging reshapes the gut microbiome (↓SCFA‐producing commensals; ↑pro‐inflammatory outputs), shifting circulating metabolites (↓SCFAs; ↑LPS, ↑TMAO, ↑PAA) that act at the BBB to increase nonspecific transcytosis, alter transport, and promote astrocyte reactivity, heightening brain vulnerability.

Centrifugation-assisted lateral flow assay platform: enhancing bioassay sensitivity with active flow control

open access: yesMicrosystems & Nanoengineering
Lateral flow assays (LFAs) are widely used in point-of-care testing (POCT) due to their simplicity and rapid operation. However, their reliance on passive capillary flow limits sensitivity, making it challenging to detect low-abundance biomarkers ...

Nutrient/TOR signaling controls adipose mitochondrial transcription factor A (TFAM) to regulate organismal growth in Drosophila

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Animals must match their growth rate to available nutrients. We show that in Drosophila larvae, the nutrient‐sensing TOR kinase controls growth by regulating levels of TFAM, a key regulator of mitochondrial function, in the adipose tissue. When nutrients are abundant, high TOR activity suppresses TFAM, lowering mitochondrial bioenergetic activity and ...

Active control of flow past a cylinder

open access: yes, 2022
The diploma thesis is considering active flow control. At first part describes boundary layer separation and Kármán vortices formation. It also explains why it is important to control the flow, and the control is divided into basic categories. Then there

Engineering peptides into antibodies—opportunities and strategies for therapeutic innovation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Peptides and antibodies occupy complementary therapeutic niches. Peptides recognize difficult targets in a compact format, while antibodies add specificity, long half‐life, and effector functions. This review examines strategies that merge both modalities—peptide grafting into loops, terminal and Fc fusions, and bioconjugation—highlighting how ...

Geometric Control of Confined Active Flow [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Active fluids, such as suspensions of swimming microorganisms, have been shown to spontaneously create flow. Controlling active flows could provide advantages for those designing microfluidic devices. Therefore, we looked into geometric control of active

An Experimental Investigation by Particle Image Velocimetry of the Active Flow Control of the Stall Inception of an Axial Compressor

open access: yesInternational Journal of Turbomachinery, Propulsion and Power
This paper presents results from active flow control experiments carried out on a single stage axial compressor. The flow under various forced conditions has been investigated using 2D 2C particle image velocimetry (PIV) on three radial planes along the ...
