Structural and Dynamic Origins of Payne Effect Reduction by Steric Stabilization in Silica Reinforced Poly(butadiene) Nanocomposites

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
Steric stabilisation of silica nanoparticles suppresses the Payne effect in poly(butadiene) nanocomposites and enables the thickness of the glassy layer to be quantified with QENS experiments. ABSTRACT Silica nanoparticles in polybutadiene nanocomposites cause significantly hindered polymer dynamics in the form of a glassy layer, which can extend more ...

A Catalog of Broad Hα and Hβ Active Galactic Nuclei in MaNGA

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Broad H α and H β emission lines (FWHM > 1000 km s ^−1 ) are incredibly efficient tracers of the high-velocity clouds encircling active galactic nuclei (AGNs).

Studies of active galactic nuclei with CTA

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper, we review the prospects for studies of active galactic nuclei (AGN) using the envisioned future Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). This review focuses on jetted AGN, which constitute the vast majority of AGN detected at gamma-ray energies ...

On the Formation and Dynamics of Micro Dew Droplets on Grass: the Role of Epicuticular Wax

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Despite their familiar appearance, dew droplets on grass emerge from a finely tuned interplay between environmental factors and surface architecture. Microscale analysis uncovers a key role of epicuticular wax micromorphologies in promoting the nucleation and growth of spherical droplets on the biphilic leaves of wheatgrass.

Reverberation Mapping Data of NGC 5548 Imply a Multicomponent Broad-line Region

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Line broadening and variability are observational hallmarks of active galactic nuclei (AGN) which allow us to measure supermassive black hole masses as well as constrain the geometry and kinematics of the emitting gas, with the most precise measurements ...

Active Galactic Nuclei in polarized light

open access: yesOpen Astronomy, 2019
Due to the compactness active galactic nuclei (AGN) are still unresolved with optical observations. However, structure and physical conditions of the matter in their central parts are especially important to study the processes of the matter accretion to

The Extremely Low Mechanical Force Generated by Nano‐Pulling Induces Global Changes in the Microtubule Network, Nuclear Morphology, and Chromatin Transcription in Neurons

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Nano‐pulling induces stabilization, reorganization, and reorientation of the microtubule network. The nucleus of stretched cells experiences increased lateral tension, becomes more spherical, and develops surface grooves. At the level of gene expression regulation, changes in nuclear morphology induce global chromatin remodeling, leading to reduced ...

Effect of Magnetic Anisotropy and Gradient‐Induced Dzyaloshinskii‐Moriya Interaction on the Formation of Magnetic Skyrmions

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Magnetic force microscopy of gradient‐induced CoPt films reveals that magnetic skyrmion size and density vary with film thickness, gradient polarity, and applied magnetic field. An increased skyrmion density is observed in films exhibiting higher magnetic anisotropy.
