A review of multiscale numerical modeling of rock mechanics and rock engineering
Multiscale numerical methods of rock mechanics and rock engineering are reviewed, and the review results show that more attention should be paid to the development of an advanced constitutive model in addition to numerical techniques themselves. Abstract Rock is geometrically and mechanically multiscale in nature, and the traditional phenomenological ...

The Infrared Continuum of Active Galaxies
We discuss the different physical processes contributing to the infrared continuum of AGN, assuming that both photoionization from the active center and shocks ionize and heat the gas and dust contained in an ensemble of clouds surrounding the nucleus ...

For most patients with chronic, progressive illnesses, maintaining good quality of life (QoL), with preserved functional capacity, is just as crucial as prolonging survival. Patients with heart failure (HF) experience much worse QoL and effort intolerance than both the general population and people with other chronic conditions, since they present a ...

Properties of Voids and Void Galaxies in the TNG300 Simulation
We investigate the properties of voids and void galaxies in the TNG300 simulation. Using a luminous galaxy catalog and a spherical void-finding algorithm, we identify 5078 voids at redshift z = 0.

Overmassive Black Holes at Cosmic Noon: Linking the Local and the High-redshift Universe
We report for the first time a sample of 12 supermassive black holes (SMBHs) hosted by low-mass galaxies at cosmic noon, i.e., in a redshift range consistent with the peak of star formation history: z ∼ 1–3.

Millimeter VLBI of NGC 1052: Dynamics
The LINER galaxy NGC 1052 is an ideal target to study the innermost regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN), given its close distance of about 20 Mpc. The source was observed at 29 epochs from 2005 to 2009 with the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) at 43 ...

ATAC‐seq in Emerging Model Organisms: Challenges and Strategies
Principle of ATAC‐seq (left), overview of arthropod species with published ATAC‐seq data (middle), summary of experimental design (right). ABSTRACT The Assay for Transposase‐Accessible Chromatin with sequencing (ATAC‐seq) is a versatile and widely utilized method for identifying potential regulatory regions, such as promoters and enhancers, within a ...

The spectral-type/luminosity and the spectral type/satellite-density relations in the 2dFGRS
We examine the relative fractions of passive (Type 1), quiet-SF (Type 2) and active-SF (Type 3+4) galaxies as a function of luminosity and number of neighbours in several volume limited samples selected from the 2dFGRS.

Multidrug resistant Pseudomonas (P.) aeruginosa is detected in many infected wounds and is challenging to treat with antibiotics. As an alternative, this work incorporates anti‐P. aeruginosa Neko phages into electrospun fibres to explore their potential for treating infected wounds.

A study of interacting galaxies from the Arp-Madore Catalogue: Triggering of star formation and nuclear activity [PDF]
We present Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) spectroscopic observations of 95 galaxies from the Arp & Madore (1987) catalogue of peculiar galaxies. These galaxies have been selected because they appear to be in pairs and small groups. These observations have allowed us to confirm that 60 galaxies are indeed interacting systems.
