Water‐saving strategies in rice farming entail cascading effects in prey–predator interactions across ecosystem boundaries

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 62, Issue 9, Page 2273-2282, September 2025.
These results show that introducing multiple drainage periods in rice fields (i.e. AWD) indirectly hampers terrestrial spider reproduction through limiting the emergence of potential preys from the aquatic to terrestrial boundaries. MSD resulted in a more conciliatory strategy as it largely reduces methane emissions and does not affect predator–prey ...

Geoviolence: Climate Injustice, Labour Migration, and Intimacy

open access: yesAntipode, Volume 57, Issue 5, Page 1914-1932, September 2025.
Abstract In the context of anthropogenic climate change, it has become increasingly imperative to examine the socio‐ecological consequences of human‐made environmental degradation as a form of violence. I advance the term “geoviolence” to refer to human actions that increase suffering through the generation, exacerbation, or instrumentalisation of ...

Reactive oxygen species act as signaling molecules to control root hair initiation and tip growth

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 247, Issue 5, Page 2042-2048, September 2025.
Summary Root hairs (RHs) increase the surface area of roots, facilitating nutrient and water uptake and plant anchorage. RHs form from root epidermal cells and elongate by polar tip growth. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) have recently been implicated as important signals that drive RH formation and elongation using both genetic and imaging approaches ...

Abundance, Diversity and Phenology of Mosquito Larvae in a Highly Anthropized Wetland: Health and Management Implications of Gándaras de Budiño (NW Spain)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2025.
The natural and anthropized wetland of Gándaras de Budiño (Galicia, Spain) hosts a great number of mosquito species. Culex pipiens s.l. and Culex torrentium pose an emerging risk for West Nile virus transmission. The temporary and polluted waters, as well as the summer and spring seasons, favor the larval proliferation of these vectors.

The Social Relevance of Water Quality and Cultural Ecosystem Services: An Application to a Saline Wetland in an Arid Environment

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 35, Issue 5, May 2025.
ABSTRACT The deterioration of wetlands and loss of ecosystem services is a consequence of human‐induced activities and the effects of climate change. In Spain, this situation is intensified in southern arid and semi‐arid regions such as Andalucía, where droughts are particularly intense.
