Estimating actual irrigation application by remotely sensed evapotranspiration observations

open access: yesAgricultural Water Management, 2010
Water managers and policy makers need accurate estimates of real (actual) irrigation applications for effective monitoring of irrigation and efficient irrigation management. However, this information is not readily available at field level for larger irrigation areas.

Variability of the Climate in Athens‐Greece Over the Last 165 Years of the Period 1858–2023: An Assessment Based on Thornthwaite's Climate Classification and Relevant Indices

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Athens' climate according to Thorthwaite is stable despite warming trends. Athens' climate remains semi‐arid and mesothermal over 165 years. Strong increases in evapotranspiration and stable precipitation were found. Soil water storage capacity affects water deficits but not aridity type.

Modelling Actual Evapotranspiration Seasonal Variability by Meteorological Data-Based Models

open access: yesHydrology, 2020
This study aims at illustrating a methodology for predicting monthly scale actual evapotranspiration losses only based on meteorological data, which mimics the evapotranspiration intra-annual dynamic.

How Well Is Surface Diurnal Temperature Range Represented by Observations at 2‐m Level

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
We demonstrate that geostationary satellites depict well the Diurnal Temperature Range (DTR) in the US but differ from information at 2 m level from model outputs. Upper: mean diurnal temperature range (DTR) using GOES‐E based land surface temperature (LST) for January (left) and July (right) during 2004–2009. Lower: mean diurnal temperature range (DTR)

Evaluation of the Simultaneous Effect of Changes of Climatic Variables and Land Use on the Actual Evapotranspiration Trend Using the SWAT Model in the Ajichi Basin

open access: yesعلوم آب و خاک, 2022
Determining the actual evapotranspiration value and analyzing its temporal trend is essential for optimal water resources management in a basin. In the present paper, the actual evapotranspiration time series is simulated and its trend is analyzed ...

Hydrological Conditions Outweigh Soil Texture, Temperature, and Terrain in German Agricultural Land Use

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background The availability of fertile land suitable for agriculture is limited. In the European Union, political demand for self‐sufficiency in staple food production currently competes with increasing ambitions for nature restoration and green energy. Meanwhile, the overall agricultural area shrinks due to land sealing.

Effect of saline irrigation on Tetragonia tetragonioides (Pall.) Kuntze grown on different soil types under greenhouse conditions

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, EarlyView.
Abstract BACKGROUND Climate change and population growth are major challenges for sustainable food production, particularly in regions affected by water scarcity and soil salinization. In this context, halophytes represent promising candidates as alternative and sustainable food crops for salt‐affected areas.

Multi‐Scale Drivers of Food‐Water‐Energy Related Ecosystem Services in the Context of Land Degradation: Insights From the Beijing‐Tianjin‐Hebei Agglomeration

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Land degradation poses significant challenges to maintaining food–water–energy (FWE) security, particularly in rapidly urbanizing regions. The ecosystem services (ES) related to FWE are critical for sustainable regional development. Yet, rapid urbanization in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei region has altered land use and ecological patterns ...

Coupling Water Purification and Carbon Sequestration at Various Spatial Scales From Supply and Demand Perspective

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Balancing ecosystem‐service supply and demand is central to understanding both the natural and social dimensions of ecosystem services and to enhancing human well‐beings. Concurrently, collaborative efforts are underway to improve multiple ecosystem services, including the promotion of carbon neutrality and water purification (WP) within basin
