Optimizing photoexcitation conditions for time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering experiments

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Time‐resolved X‐ray solution scattering (TR‐XSS) is a powerful technique to visualize how proteins change their structure in real time after light activation. Selecting the right laser photoexcitation conditions—fluence, excitation geometry, and sample refresh rate—is critical to maximize the experimental signal while avoiding unwanted side effects ...

Dual native G‐quadruplex folding is associated with chromatin looping at the MYC locus

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
BG4‐detectable G‐quadruplex (G4) in HaCaT and NHEK keratinocytes identified folded and unfolded G4s enriched at promoters/TSSs and active enhancers, whereas unfolded G4s also overlapped weak/poised enhancers. At MYC–PVT1, 3C‐qPCR detected enhancer–promoter looping only when G4s were simultaneously folded at both regulatory elements under native ...

Identification and characterisation of calcitonin receptor isoforms expressed in glioblastoma derived glioma stem and U‐87 MG cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Glioblastoma cells express calcitonin receptor variants (CT receptor isoforms) that may help them survive stress. Using qPCR, transcript‐specific long‐read nanopore sequencing, immunofluorescence co‐localisation and comparative sequence analysis, this study identifies a novel alternatively spliced CALCR transcript that encodes the CTb receptor isoform ...

The alleged activity of active intellect: A wild goose chase or a puzzle to be solved?

open access: yesZagadnienia Filozoficzne w Nauce, 2014
Trying to describe the activity of Aristotle’s active intellect, we will sooner or later realize that we cannot find its right description, because Aristotle did not provide for one.

The Course of Actualization [PDF]

open access: yesLanguage, 2012
Actualization is traditionally seen as the process following syntactic reanalysis whereby an item’s new syntactic status manifests itself in new syntactic behavior. The process is gradual in that some new uses of the reanalyzed item appear earlier or more readily than others.

Genetic dissection of human ABCE1 in yeast reveals separable requirements for ribosome recycling and suppression of aberrant reinitiation

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Human ABCE1 cannot functionally replace its yeast ortholog. Yeast–human chimera analysis identified NBD1 as a major interspecies barrier. Genetic screening yielded hABCE1 revertants that rescue yeast viability but fail to suppress aberrant translation reinitiation in the 3′ UTR.

On the Actuality of Forms

open access: yesMateria Arquitectura, 2014
The essay discusses some of the techniques Josef Albers, the famous artist-educator, employed in his own work and in his teaching to make form activate the mind of the creator.

Actualism, Serious Actualism, and Quantified Modal Logic

open access: yesNotre Dame Journal of Formal Logic, 2018
The paper navigates in the waters between metaphysical doctrine and formal logical representation. The goal is to build a first-order modal logic that accommodates both ``actualism'' (the view there are no merely possible things, that is, things that do not exist but have some alternative kind of being) and ``serious actualism'' (that all sentences ...
