Carbon Nanotube Actuators

open access: yesScience, 1999
Electromechanical actuators based on sheets of single-walled carbon nanotubes were shown to generate higher stresses than natural muscle and higher strains than high-modulus ferroelectrics. Like natural muscles, the macroscopic actuators are assemblies of billions of individual nanoscale actuators.

Vat Photopolymerization of High Molecular Weight Polymer Latexes with Pseudothermoplastic Properties for Recyclability

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A photocurable latex system enables high‐resolution vat photopolymerization of water‐dispersed thermoplastics, yielding pseudothermoplastic materials with recyclability. The formulation permits precise control over mechanical properties and supports reprocessing through conventional and extrusion‐based methods. Compatibility with two‐photon 3D printing

Optimal Actuator Location of the Minimum Norm Controls for Stochastic Heat Equations

open access: yes, 2017
In this paper, we study the approximate controllability for the stochastic heat equation over measurable sets, and the optimal actuator location of the minimum norm controls.

Thermocouple for heating and cooling of memory metal actuators [PDF]

open access: yes, 1988
A semiconductor thermocouple unit is provided for heating and cooling memory metal actuators. The semiconductor thermocouple unit is mounted adjacent to a memory metal actuator and has a heat sink attached to it.

Bioinspired Shape Reconfigurable, Printable, and Conductive “E‐Skin” Patch with Robust Antibacterial Properties for Human Health Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this article, Hojin Kim, Sayan Deb Dutta, and co‐workers report a shape‐reconfigurable, 3D printable, and highly adhesive slime‐like ‘electronic skin’ or ‘E‐skin’ patch for human health sensing and tissue engineering applications. The dual reinforcement of hydrogel patch with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) improve the ...

Superconducting linear actuator [PDF]

open access: yes
Special actuators are needed to control the orientation of large structures in space-based precision pointing systems. Electromagnetic actuators that presently exist are too large in size and their bandwidth is too low.

On the role of actuation for the control of streaky structures in boundary layers

open access: yes, 2019
This work deals with the closed-loop control of streaky structures induced by free-stream turbulence in a zero-pressure gradient, transitional boundary layer, by means of localized sensors and actuators.

Rotating Liquid Marble Microreactors for Enhanced Enzymatic Reactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Dynamic magnetic liquid marbles (LMs), stabilized by hydrophobic magnetic proteinaceous colloidosomes, function as effective microreactors for enzymatic processes. Precise magnetic manipulation allows for the rotation of these LMs, enhancing the efficiency of the enzymatic cascade reaction both at the air/water interface and within biphasic enzyme ...

The linear boom actuator designed for the Galileo spacecraft [PDF]

open access: yes, 1983
Because the linear boom actuator is to be used on a flight spacecraft, as opposed to a ground based application, there is a comprehensive set of requirements. First, of course, the actuator must be capable of positioning and holding the load.
