Minimal Actuation for a Flat Actuated Flexible Manifold
IEEE Transactions on Robotics, 2016The fabrication of a multiactuator mechanism requires excessive wiring that may become the design's bottleneck. We introduce a novel actuation method for an actuated flexible manifold (AFM). The AFM is a 2-D surface embedded in $\mathbb {R}^2$ or $\mathbb {R}^3$ .

Actuation capability of a dielectric elastomer balloon actuator
2016 12th IEEE International Conference on Control and Automation (ICCA), 2016Dielectric elastomers show great promise for soft actuators. As the allowable deformation range of dielectric elastomers is strictly limited by the material failures, the actuation ability of a dielectric elastomer actuator is accordingly bounded. Although the material failures have been well studied, little literature has been released regarding the ...

Actuator selection for over-actuated systems using the actuator effectiveness index
International Journal of Dynamics and Control, 2020This paper presents a new actuator selection methodology for over-actuated systems based on the actuator effectiveness index. In the proposed method, possible actuator candidates are quantitatively compared. The index is calculated for all candidates and is then used to select the appropriate actuator set based on their effectiveness.

Effective Actuation: High Bandwidth Actuators and Actuator Scaling Laws
2001Abstract : The project advances active flow control to enable new Air Force capabilities. Advances in both the development of new actuator hardware and in understanding the flow physics have been achieved. Four key new advances have been achieved in Phase I of this AFOSR/STTR Program. First, a new high power (125-160 dB), high bandwidth (factor of 8.6),

Actuation of a discontinuous structure with piezoelectric actuators
Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2008Abstract An alternate approach to exciting a one-dimensional structure with discontinuities using a piezoelectric actuator is presented and examined. Instead of being bonded to the uniform side of a beam, the piezoelectric actuator is attached such that it spans two adjacent rib discontinuities.

An actuator surface can be defined as a two dimensional geometric region in a fluid at which a discontinuity in any flow property can occur [26]. We confine ourselves to a more restricted definition. We will use the term actuator surface for a two dimensional region in a fluid on which an external force field is concentrated. At this surface we have to
