Acute aortic syndrome (AAS) is a rather rare but often life-threatening cause of thoraco-abdominal pain. AAS includes acute aortic dissection (AD), intramural hematoma (IMH) and penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer (PAU), in which the latter may progress to AD.
