Acute hepatic failure in pregnancy
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, 2004Severe liver dysfunction in late pregnancy is an unusual but dramatic event because it can progress very rapidly to fulminating disease and also because two lives, that of the mother and foetus, are involved. We report a descriptive study of a pregnant woman presenting with severe liver dysfunction.

The acute onset of hepatitis may occur in adolescents as a result of hepatic damage from infectious agents, drugs, or toxins, or it may be the initial presentation of a chronic autoimmune or metabolic liver disease. The authors characterize the clinical features of each of these disorders emphasizing recognition and diagnosis.
