Acute mesenteric ischemia represents one to two percent of all gastrointestinal illnesses. There are three possible causes of acute arterial mesenteric ischemia: embolism, thrombosis, and nonocclusive mesenteric insufficiency. The key to early diagnosis is a high index of suspicion.

Acute mesenteric ischemia: endovascular therapy
Abdominal Imaging, 2006Acute mesenteric ischemia (AMI) is an abdominal emergency with a high mortality. Prompt revascularization can prevent intestinal infarction and reduce mortality. We report three cases of acute occlusive mesenteric ischemia without signs of intestinal necrosis, which were successfully managed with endovascular interventions.

A 78-year-old woman presented to the emergency department with a 12-h history of sudden-onset abdominal pain. She had vomited after the pain started, and she had also had two episodes of diarrhoea. Until this time, she had been well, although she was known to be in atrial fibrillation and took digoxin 125 μg daily.
