Acute pericarditis

2008
This chapter investigates acute pericarditis. The pericardium serves to protect the heart from physiologic changes in intracardiac pressure related to respiration and postural change, and it may also augment the mechanical function of the cardiac chambers.

The management of acute pericarditis

Acute Medicine Journal, 2005
Acute pericarditis is usually a benign self-limiting condition, often of unexplained or viral aetiology, involving inflammation of the pericardial layers. It is often part of the differential diagnosis in patients admitted with acute chest pain and can be confused with acute myocardial infarction, acute pulmonary embolism and pleurisy.

Acute benign pericarditis

American Heart Journal, 1964
Abstract A resume of the condition known as acute benign pericarditis has been presented. Seasonal incidence, sporadic cases with histories of acute respiratory infections prior to the onset of chest pain, and the increasing number of reports of positive viral studies suggest a virus to be the cause in the greater percentage of cases.

Acute constrictive pericarditis

The Journal of Pediatrics, 1961
Summary A case of acute constrictive pericarditis secondary to meningococcal infection is presented. Fatal concretio cordis developed with unprecedented speed 21 days after the onset of suppurative pericarditis. ACUTE STAPHYLOCOCCAL PERICARDITIS

Pediatrics, 1957
A survey of bacterial pericarditis in children at Charity Hospital shows an increasing preponderance of staphylococcal infections. It is impressively less common as a complication of pneumonia and osteomyelitis than it was two decades ago. The site of entry for organisms is usually difficult to determine, but the pericarditis is always part of a ...
