Salivary microbiota and clinical periodontal measures predicting cardiometabolic disease mortality: A nationwide survey

open access: yesJournal of Periodontology, EarlyView.
Abstract Background Although periodontitis and oral microbiota are linked to cardiometabolic diseases (CMD), it is unclear if they similarly predict CMD mortality. We compared the predictive ability of salivary microbiota and periodontal disease measures for CMD mortality in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES).

The southern megalopolis: using the past to predict the future of urban sprawl in the Southeast U.S.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2014
The future health of ecosystems is arguably as dependent on urban sprawl as it is on human-caused climatic warming. Urban sprawl strongly impacts the urban ecosystems it creates and the natural and agro-ecosystems that it displaces and fragments.

Soil properties and road proximity likely influence plant and bacterial traits and diversity more than habitat size in small urban greenspaces

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The global decline in biodiversity can be partly ameliorated by sympathetic design of green spaces within urban environments. This includes roundabouts on road systems. This study utilised a combination of approaches to assess levels of plant and bacterial diversity in roundabouts of varying size, soil characteristics and habitat complexity.

Single-ion addressing via trap potential modulation in global optical fields

open access: yesNew Journal of Physics, 2020
To date, individual addressing of ion qubits has relied primarily on local Rabi or transition frequency differences between ions created via electromagnetic field spatial gradients or via ion transport operations.

Benthic Macroinvertebrate Recovery After Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades: Implications for Biomonitoring

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT During the past decade, major upgrades have been made to the Kitchener and Waterloo wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the Grand River watershed in Ontario, Canada. As part of efforts to evaluate the effectiveness of these investments (>$450 M CDN), a benthic macroinvertebrate (BMI) monitoring program was initiated by sampling upstream and

Estimating an individual-level deprivation index for HIV/HCV coinfected persons in Canada.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
BackgroundHIV-HCV coinfected individuals are often more deprived than the general population. However, deprivation is difficult to measure, often relying on aggregate data which does not capture individual heterogeneity.
