Usability of Adaptable and Adaptive Menus
2007This study investigates the usability of different adaptable and adaptive menu interfaces in a desktop environment. A controlled experiment was conducted to compare two different adaptive menus and one adaptable menu with a traditional menu. The two adaptive menus include an adaptive split menu that moves frequently used menu items to the top, and an ...

The balance between adaptability and adaptation
Biosystems, 2002In his 1983 book, Adaptability, Michael Conrad explored the quantitative relationship between adaptability and adaptation using the conditional 'entropy' of information theory as his primary tool. The conditional entropy can be used to estimate the connectivity of the network of system exchanges, a key indicator of system stability.

Various user groups, e.g. people with a disability, could benefit highly from products or interfaces that could either be adjusted (adaptability) or adjust themselves (adaptivity) to the needs of individual users. Advances in technology are gradually enabling designers to create such products, but guidelines that help designers doing this are scarce ...

1) The eye may be regarded as an automatic camera that keeps the average sensitivity near the middle of the working range. 2) Nerve signals are contrast-coded, and hence are not changed by changes in general illumination. 3) Rod thresholds can be raised three-fold by a background from which only 1% of the rods have caught one quantum.

Adapting NLP to Adaptive Hypermedia
2006Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques ought to be really useful for people building adaptive hypermedia (AH) systems. This talk explores the gap between theory and practice, illustrating it with examples of things that do (and don’t work), and it suggests a way of closing the gap.
