Thermodynamic exploration of the adaptive cycle

open access: yesEcological Modelling
The adaptive cycle was proposed by Holling in 1985 to explain macroscale patterns and processes of ecosystem dynamics. According to this qualitative model, ecological succession progresses through four stages: 1) exploitation, 2) conservation, 3 ...

AN ADAPTIVE BOOLEAN AUTOMATON TO MODEL CIRCADIAN CYCLES

International Journal of Neural Systems, 1996
We propose a Boolean cellular automaton to model an artificial adaptive living organism in order to investigate the development of cyclic vital functions during a simulated evolutionary process. The organism is endowed with a basic architecture consisting of several sensor (input), motor (output) and processing Boolean gates whose connectivity pattern

Prey Adaptation as a Cause of Predator-Prey Cycles

Evolution, 1997
We analyze simple models of predator-prey systems in which there is adaptive change in a trait of the prey that determines the rate at which it is captured by searching predators. Two models of adaptive change are explored: (1) change within a single reproducing prey population that has genetic variation for vulnerability to capture by the predator ...

Adaptive duty cycling for energy harvesting systems

Proceedings of the 2006 international symposium on Low power electronics and design - ISLPED '06, 2006
Harvesting energy from the environment is feasible in many applications to ameliorate the energy limitations in sensor networks. In this paper, we present an adaptive duty cycling algorithm that allows energy harvesting sensor nodes to autonomously adjust their duty cycle according to the energy availability in the environment.

The Adaptive Cycle Engine on Standard Duty Cycles

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2019
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Continuing research introduced at the 2018 WCX conference, this paper shows the result of simulations where a midsize sedan (1700 kg) fitted with an adaptive cycle engine and a CVT is operated over three standard duty cycles: US06, UDDS, and HWFET, and compared with the results ...

The Adaptive Cycle Engines

SAE Technical Paper Series, 2018
<div class="section abstract"><div class="htmlview paragraph">Traditionally, internal combustion engines follow thermodynamic cycles comprising a fixed number of crank revolutions, in order to accommodate compression of the incoming air as well as expansion of the combustion products.

Cardiovascular adaptations to 10 days of cycle exercise

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1997
Mier, Constance M., Michael J. Turner, Ali A. Ehsani, and Robert J. Spina. Cardiovascular adaptations to 10 days of cycle exercise. J. Appl. Physiol. 83(6): 1900–1906, 1997.—We hypothesized that 10 days of training would enhance cardiac output (CO) and stroke volume (SV) during peak exercise and increase the inotropic response to β-adrenergic ...

Adoption + Adaptation In Performance Cycling

2019
This research has explored the relationship between cyclist and machine, through exploratory research methods and heuristic exploration by proposing a series of custom hardware interventions as way of enriching mountain bike rider’s experience. Changing the mountain bike rider’s experience and the mindset of the community of avid cyclists and industry ...
