Optimal and adaptive control of aero-optical wavefronts for adaptive optics
Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 2012This paper compares two control methods to predict and correct aero-optical wavefronts derived from recent flight-test data. The first is an optimal linear time-invariant controller constructed from an identified state-space model of the turbulence flow.

Adaptive control in an adaptive optics experiment
Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 2010This paper presents results from an adaptive optics experiment in which an adaptive control loop augments a classical adaptive optics feedback loop. Closed-loop wavefront errors measured by a self-referencing interferometer are fed back to the control loops, which drive a membrane deformable mirror to correct the wavefront.

The transversal filter is widely used in digital data processing. In this paper, we describe a method for using optically tapped, Bragg cell delay lines to implement a general adaptive linear prediction algorithm. Flexibility is achieved through changing the electronic signals.

There are two different approaches for improving the accuracy of analog optical associative processors: postprocessing with a bimodal system and preprocessing with a preconditioner. These two approaches can be combined to develop an adaptive optical multiprocessor that can adjust the computational steps depending on the data and produce solutions of ...

From the earliest days and nights of telescopic astronomy, atmospheric turbulence has been a serious detriment to optical performance. The new technology of adaptive optics can overcome this problem by compensating for the wavefront distortion that results from turbulence.

It has long been recognised that the optical quality of the human eye is far from diffraction limited. This affects our visual acuity and severely limits the resolution at which images of the living retina can be obtained. Adaptive optics is a technique that can correct for the eye's aberrations and provide diffraction limited resolution.

The image quality degradation due to atmospheric turbulence is one of the main limitations for imaging, laser propagation, and communication through the atmosphere. Adaptive optics is a technology to overcome these problems by real-time phase compensation.

Adaptive optics: a breakthrough in astronomy
Experimental Astronomy, 2009Until the 1970s, atmospheric seeing was considered as an absolute limitation for angular resolution of ground-based optical telescopes, exactly at the time of the conception of the new generation of giant optical telescopes, as the VLT and the Keck. Emerging in the context of the cold war with many constraints due to the research being classified, but ...
