Additive Decompositions, Random Allocations, and Threshold Phenomena

Combinatorics, Probability and Computing, 2004
An additive decomposition of a set $I$ of nonnegative integers is an expression of $I$ as the arithmetic sum of two other such sets. If the smaller of these has $p$ elements, we have a $p$-decomposition. If $I$ is obtained by randomly removing $n^{\alpha}$ integers from $\{0,\dots,n-1\}$, decomposability translates into a balls-and-urns problem, which ...

Additive Decomposition of Real Matrices

Linear and Multilinear Algebra, 2002
The orthogonal orbit ${\cal O}(A)$ of an n × n real matrix A is the set of real matrices of the form $P^t \ AP$ where $P^t P = I_n$ . We show that $A/ \| A\|$ is an affine sum of four orthogonal matrices, and note that $A^t$ can always be written as an affine combination of no more than 2 n m 1 matrices in ${\cal O}(A)$ .

Least Squares Smoothers and Additive Decomposition

1994
The problem of the decomposition of data z ∈ IRT into several components xi ∈ IRT via the minimization of a sum of quadratic forms x’Aix is considered. The resulting transformations of z onto the optimal components are linear and diagonalizable with eigenvalues in the unit interval, which characterizes the transformations as smoothers.

Addition and decomposition of convex polytopes

Israel Journal of Mathematics, 1964
A new addition of convex polytopes is defined and the possibility of representing each polytope as a sum of “standard” polytopes is ...

Ammonium nitrate thermal decomposition with additives

Journal of Loss Prevention in the Process Industries, 2015
Abstract Runaway reactions present a potentially serious threat to the chemical process industry and the community; such reactions occur time and time again often with devastating consequences. The main objective of this research is to study the root causes associated with ammonium nitrate (AN) explosions during storage.

Additive Efficiency Decomposition in Network DEA

2014
In conventional data envelopment analysis (DEA), decision making units (DMUs) are generally treated as a black-box in the sense that internal structures are ignored, and the performance of a DMU is assumed to be a function of a set of chosen inputs and outputs.
